Row over Kinks pub beer garden plans
PLANS for the Clissold Arms to extend its beer garden has been met by objections from residents
THE future of the Kinks' Corner might now be guaranteed at the famous Clissold Arms pub in Fortis Green, but plans to extend its beer garden so drinkers can enjoy more Waterloo Sunsets have run into fierce opposition.
Residents are outraged at plans to install three double doors at the rear of the pub, opening onto a beer garden of wood decking with space for 19 picnic tables.
The expansion will halve the size of the car park and lead to endless noisy merry-making, fear neighbours.
Earlier this year, there was a world-wide outcry over fears the pub's Kinks Corner, paying homage to the formation of the band, was to be lost in a makeover. Pub bosses eventually said it was not under threat.
Malcolm Matthews, who lives next to the car park in Orchard Court, off Annington Road, led a successful campaign to cap the pub's hours at the beginning of the year.
He said: "They want to halve the car park and right across the back end of it they want to have a patio garden area. That's an enormous area and that is not going to be fun for us from a noise point of view. You can imagine the chattering and laughter and all the rest of it going on well into the night. It will travel across the road and all around."
He added: "If you halve the car park you can imagine the traffic problems we will have round that place. It will be impossible. People will be hunting for parking places.
"We have got controlled streets to the west of us, but at the moment we don't have restricted parking - and we don't want it."
Mr Matthews says he already has 50 signatures backing his objections to the proposals.
So far five residents have objected to the plans, which have been lodged on behalf of licensees Caroline Jones and Hugh O'Boyle, directors of Brighton-based Jobo Developments.
The application says the pub is "in need of redecoration and 'opening up' to meet the needs of customers," and keenly points out their intent is to broaden its appeal and "encourage the more mature customer".
Licensee Caroline Jones, director of Jobo Developments, said: "We are working with the local authorities in respect of the application and will take full consideration of local residents' concerns when informed."
Haringey Council will likely rule on the application next month.
