I read about his nomination a few weeks ago! I wonder if he'd been nominated before? It sure is overdue! The Kinks were inducted into the R&R Hall in their first year of eligibility which is a very high honor and so, you would think their chief songwriter and vocalist would be inducted into the Songwriters Hall much sooner than 23 years later (if he gets in)!

There are some pretty impressive names among those nominees. I suppose it's no dishonor to be beat out by the likes of BB King, Steve Winwood, or Bobby Womack. On the other hand, there are also some derivative hacks on there. (I won't name names, but you know who you are.) I wouldn't mind seeing Elvis Costello win, either.

I actually studied the entire list of inductees about a year ago! I recall that hall started in 1970 with Hank Williams Sr. being an original inductee! I tend to not dismiss artists as hacks because I feel musical acts attract different fans in differents ways and reasons and I don't like to be a judge and jury of that, for the most part. I do think some reason can be used to say that this or that artist is enjoyable to many but perhaps their songs are not in any way timeless or not as creative as others; a major criteria for a 'songwriters hall', I believe.
I enjoy Steve Winwoods voice and his work in bands and solo and believe he should be in, for example. However, Winwood is not in the Rock Hall as a solo artist and one of his bands (Traffic) entered as a 12th balloter, I believe (Spencer Davis Group was nominated in recent times, right?). The Rock Hall had it's initial inductees in 86' and you had a slew of vintage artists inducted; I think the subsequent 25 year rule was waived or ignored for some. It is a magnificent honor to be inducted in your first year of eligibility in the Rock Hall (Kinks 1990!!) and I think Ray Davies, as chief songwriter in such a storied band, should have been incucted earlier in the Songwriters Hall. I question some names on the Songwriters list but for the most part respect who has been inducted; yes, I can think of others who should be in too! I saw Bobby Womack got in the Rock Hall in 09' for nothing other than comparisons sake as he should be in the Songwriters Hall !
The ban from America is something that hurt the Kinks; and Ray and Dave's esteem, in the US, it seems to me, and the Songwriters Hall seems to be influenced by artists impact on the US market. I think most Halls have that US market bias! 'Waterloo Sunset' was played sparringly in America and I have to think that without the stigma of the ban and the lack of promotion that resulted for Kinks music in the US, that it would have been a big hit as well as other Kinks tunes from the late 60s; and thus, the band would have had more of a legacy to US listeners and critics ! I think that ban had a lot to do with the Kinks being described as the most underrated band in the world, almost to the level of cliche among those in the know! In the case of The Kinks, the Rock Hall 'properly' recognized their importance despite the ban !
I would think Costello would get in and I believe he was a 1st ballot Rock Hall inductee. I think it's pretty obvious that Ray has been eligible for the Songwriters Hall for much longer than EC. EC got virtually no pop radio play in America (2 Top 40s, 1 Top 20) which obviously didn't take away from his critical acclaim; BUT, what if he had been banned from America from 78 to 82?
All that said,
ANY WAY YOU WANT TO SLICE IT RAY SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN MANY YEARS AGO !

Songwriters Hall of Fame ANNOUNCES 2013 INDUCTEES
*Tony Hatch, Mick Jones & Lou Gramm, Holly Knight, JD Souther, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry to be Inducted June 13th in NYC*
These legendary songwriters wrote such mega-hits as "Downtown," "I Want To Know What Love Is," "Love Is A Battlefield," "Best Of My Love" and "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)." The star-studded induction event is slated for *Thursday, June 13th *at the* Marriott Marquis Hotel *in* New York City.In their great wisdom, the Songwriters Hall of Fame has decided that "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" is a greater song than "Waterloo Sunset." Well, some of these are fine songwriters who totally deserve the honour. And I see that they wanted to spread the honors among different eras and types of music. But I do not concur with their decision.

I really don't believe in these things. They are so "industry", and cliché.
My personal Hall of Fame is very different from these official ones. More fun and more select!

I hate to think that these awards really mater to the recipient, but in the case of Ray, it's a well deserved nod to one of the most talented writers of our time. Another trophy for the case, yes but in the scheme of things, it's more a lasting tribute to the test of time. More and more young writers have acclaimed Ray and the KinKs as their song writing heros. My own son, a songwriter in his own right, says you can not deny that Ray has influenced just as many of the NEW songsmiths as say the Beatles or Dylan.
I know that playing these iconic musicians in our home, while he was growing up, has influenced his own abilities as a songwriter. Although Kevin's style of music is far removed from them, the crafting is there.

Craft is underrated. A great song has good bones, and only a true craftsman understands that.
