Thanks, friends. Okay, true story: Frank Lima just called me from the road. He told me Ray was telling him that he hadn't seen Mount Rushmore. I had already done this yesterday and put it on the gray board. He must be psychic. Strange.

Quick there's still time to blast Ray's face into Mount Rushmore before he gets there!

Quick there's still time to blast Ray's face into Mount Rushmore before he gets there! Yeah, it should be easy, what with power tools and all.

Regrettably no. My brain is full of useless trivia like that.

Yeah, you're handy to have around. You're "the source".

I’m headed up to L.A. for a few days and likely won’t have time or internet access until Saturday so I'll post a brief review of Ray's San Diego show with perhaps some more details later. I've been hesitating to post, because imo Ray was not at his best Sunday night. In line before the show got to meet Jen and Sleepless from the gray board, shook hands with Frank Lima , and met young James. Jen had painted beautiful paper plate portraits of Ray and Bill (which I hope she got to give to them later). It turned out that James could not get into the show since the venue was 21+ and he is 20. Apparently Ray's "people" tried to get him in, but the House of Blues would not budge (what can I say, they are an inflexible corporate chain of music venues...) It was really a pisser... The HoB crowd was enthusiastic and Ray was quite funny when he first came out on stage, posing for the press photogs by sticking his tongue out. However, Ray didn’t display the typical energy that I’ve seen him do in the past. As a matter of fact, Ray seemed fairly tired and distracted during the show. Since he had done so many shows previously, it is totally understandable, but I honestly felt kind of badly (and a tad worried) for him. In particular, he struggled to hit some of the higher notes and surprisingly went flat more than a couple of times. Additionally it appeared that his blue Ovation guitar was giving him a lot of trouble and at one point even cursed at it out loud (“unf**kingbelievable”). I felt more disappointed for Ray than I did for myself. Mr. Zebub kind of summed it up neatly: “Well everyone has their bad days.” I hope Ray is not pushing himself too hard and can get some good rest before he plays in Japan. (If it is any consolation to James, this was probably the best show for him to have missed.) Set list seemed quite abbreviated from others I’ve seen posted. I may not remember everything as I didn’t write anything down and it is not in order. Interspersed were snippets of readings and lyrics from other tunes. Ray and Bill: I Need You This Is Where I Belong Dedicated Follower of Fashion In A Moment See My Friends Waterloo Sunset Sunny Afternoon Dead End Street Ray, Bill, and The 88: Till the End of the Day Where Have All The Good Times Gone I'm Not Like Everybody Else Victoria 20th Century Man Celluloid Heroes Come Dancing E- All Day and All of the Night

Thanks for your review Bub! Such a shame that Ray wasn't at his best, especially since it's been a while since you last saw him I remember thinking that Ray seemed tired when I saw him at Cornbury festival last year, with all the touring he does I guess it's inevitable that he gets tired. Poor Ray, I hope he'll be alright. He always seems to take so much on, and I remember him saying in a recent interview that his health is not quite what it should be I wonder what was wrong with his guitar, hopefully he'll get it fixed but that must've been annoying for him. It sucks that James couldn't get in, he's a nice guy. Of course the drinking age is 18 over here and I reckon James likes that fact when he's in the UK! I believe he's going to all the UK dates in October too. It was really nice of Ray's crew to try and get him in, just a shame that it had no effect. The set list seems similar to the last few times I've seen Ray, I wish he'd mix it up just a bit but I guess the more casual fans want to hear the hits. I remember being a bit disappointed that Ray didn't do any solo stuff at Hop Farm, some of his solo stuff is just as good as the stuff he did with the Kinks! Despite Ray seeming tired and the guitar problems I hope you still had a nice time Bub, and enjoyed meeting some folks from the RD board - what an honour it must've been to shake hands with Frank! ;D Oh, and did you get any good photos? I hope your trip to LA goes ok!
