I should have thought of that one. Herbie follows me. Not literally, but he keeps popping into my consciousness. You see, he was created by my high school art teacher, Gordon Buford, who sold his idea to Disney all those years ago. Roll on Herbie - and Gordo.

We (the students) heard the story the same year that the first film came out. He got $5000 from Disney for the rights to the story - which was actually quite different from what ended up on the screen. His story was darker - about how some people anthropomorphize inanimate objects as well as place too much value on them. Anyway, turns out that MGM offered him $50,000 for the rights about a month after he sold them to Disney. C'est la vie. His name is in the credits, though - from the first through all the sequels.
