all in all a great box set,to me its much more satisfying than picture box, which looking back on it, was a greatest hits package with some unreleased music, some of which had been unreleased for a reason, my opinion don't kill me with an excellent booklet.i can understand the historic aspect of the home recordings on disc 5, but i think they should have been left off and the audio from the sleepwalker old grey whistle test included instead. the sound quality is awful. i got my copy yesterday from amazon uk and am happy with it. i didn't realize that all the material on the dvd could fit onto 1 disc. the book is great as well. overall sound quality from what i've sampled so far is great(apart from the items i mentioned from disc 5), i've just skimmed a few of the dvd tracks and will watch it when i have enough time to enjoy it properly but from what i've viewed so far it is good. there is an article somewhere where ray says this is only the tip of the iceberg, i hope more of the "iceberg" becomes available at some point

Donl, disc 5 is the only one I haven't listened to yet, is it really bad? The Sleepwalker songs on the Old Grey Whistle Test (included on the DVD) are really good, I hadn't seen them before. I agree that it would've been nice to include the audio from that set on one of the CDs. Yes, you should set aside a bit of time to enjoy the DVD properly, I watched it all at once and I think it was about 3 hours long, maybe more! I liked the unreleased stuff on Picture Book, but of course we won't kill you for not liking it - that might be a tad extreme! Re the 'tip of the iceberg' thing...I mentioned it on the previous page, I heard Ray say that on a recent radio interview, maybe there'll be another box set in a few more years?

the sound on the bootleg recordings is bad, old tapes that couldn't really be improved and should have been left off in my view, the other tracks sound fine. the performances are fine its the audio quality that takes from them.

I was pretty disappointed by Picture Book as well. There were many things I expected to be on it that we didn't get, like Scrapheap City sung by Ray, the b-side version of Massive Reductions... It would have been much better to have all the unreleased material on a single CD, I don't need to have the same version of Sunny Afternoon for the seventh time!
The BBC box is a different story, it looks great. I still haven't got it but I'm supposed to be receiving it this week, I'll post my thoughts about it then.

i agree ina, i rarely play picture book these days. bbc is what i have hoped for since its all basically live. i wish the kinks managment would put out live albums along the lines of the grateful deads dicks (now daves) picks series.

Kudos to Andrew Sandoval for having curated a more satisfying collektors set! I still have to order it, I must confess, but after all you guys have said, I'm going to pony up for the full set!

There would have been no point of including an audio only version of the 'OGWT' special. Because the TV audio of that show was compressed, the audio from TV back then had a restricted audio frequency range and broadcasters used to compress them to suit the useable frequency range. Therefore putting this show onto an audio CD would have not added to what is heard on the DVD, in fact in audio only form would have highlighted the compression and been as well as being huge duplication. The Christmas Concert is different in that the TV and and the Radio 1 feeds are different. Material on disc 5 is included for historic importance. We did get back to the 1st generation 1/4" reel for 'Colour Me Pop' (sourced by yours truly) and Andrew did his best - so it is presented as best it can. I for one is glad it made it on. I would urge any one who wants the box version and not got it yet, to pick it up as soon as possible. It's a true limited edition and its is not going to be around for ever and signs are it's going fast. Brgds. Russell

Yes, thankyou for the info Russell, and for explaining why the OGWT stuff couldn't be included on a CD. In any case, it's a great set and well worth the money in my opinion!

I also ordered the Waterloo Sunset compilation while I was at. It never hurts to bump up sales of Kinks recordings!

I finally got it a week ago and what I've listened to so far is great in both quality and quantity. And specially the DVD, it's so good to have it all put together and from an "official" source.
I guess we'll always be able to complain about something, what we'd like to have and what we don't, but this set is very complete. Andrew and everybody have done a great job, I'd also recommend everybody to get it before it's too late.

Thanks, it is always good to hear feedback. I do think the team got it right on this one. russell could there be more kinks bbc releases in the future or was this release it? Never say never, as material is always coming to light and there are few stragglers to round up. But, I would imagine as far as an all encompassing set that is it for the time being. Brgds. Russell
