Why, what a shock!! Little Steven actually has conquered his shyness and is now a writer as well as an actor and musician and radio personality and general celebrity-about-town. I just finished an essay on the same subject -- it should appear sometime tomorrow at www.blogcritics.org/music. (Don't have the full link yet...)

Thanks pm, for a GREAT rant! Right on, sistah! And hol....I gotta say you really outdid even YOURSELF with this one! Soooo many bits I love...they hit just the right chord...like the LYRICS! We were BLOWN away by this and actually had a cool English teacher who let us analyze them in class!(I had relied on the lyrics often appearing on my Dad's SING ALONG WITH MITCH albums to learn so many of the old classics and to, well, sing along with Mitch, but the Pepper lyrics elevated MY music from mere rock music to the status of poetry. It WAS a great validation.) Then the bit about 'A DAY IN THE LIFE' in the dark!!!! We did this ALOT...but I gotta tell ya...whenever we lit a candle while playing it, the flame ALWAYS shot up higher And I really appreciate the nod to those who may have 'other bands closer to their hearts FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER' ...very generous! I WAS TURNED ON...it made me happy that my Beatles LOVED turning me on.... All I can say to anyone who doesn't get it is: YOU SHOULDA BEEN THERE!!!Really, thanks, hol, for capturing all of it so well...you should send it into Billboard to show 'em what they're missing!

Here's the link to my Sergeant Pepper article -- blogcritics.org/archives/2007/05/31/094942.php[/quote Absolutely wonderful read, Ms. Hughes... insightful, witty, heartfelt and from the hip. I admit that they were the best, and that Sgt. Pepper is a masterpiece because it holds so much more than just the music.

Thanks. Apparently a couple of my smarty-pants fellow reviewers do not agree -- but that unwillingness to admit that anything popular was also great, that's what makes them critics!

If those "critics" didn't live through it, they have no credibility with me. If they DID live through it but don't (or didn't) 'get it', their brains are probably too fried to remember how it felt. Not just how it SOUNDED, but how it FELT!

Princess, I enjoyed reading the bumper stickers!
Holly, great article! 1967 was such a great year for music. There were so many magnificent albums released that year, and Pepper was the best!

Just remember: a critic is someone who knows the route but can't drive the car

I'll have to remember that one, Guin!! I call myself a music writer, not a critic, by the way. :
