Well, I've been doing long car trips with my daughter for past month, and when she's in control of the radio, I've had to listen to some truly awful songs. Top of the list is Usher's "Scream" ("ooh baby baby ooh baby baby ooh baby baby" -- stellar lyrics!). Then there is Demi Lovato's burbulous "Give My Heart a Break" and Cher Lloyd's whiny "Want U Back." After that umpteenth time, even the catchy numbers like Maroon 5's "Pay Phone" and Train's "Drive By" grated on my nerves. Pink's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" is a good example of a song I enjoyed at first until I heard it over and over. The production qualities are so strident, they hurt my ears, and the lyrics are almost completely devoid of wit. (Well, actually Pink's "Blow Me" is a little witty, but way too angry for my tastes.) And don't even get me started on how aggressively sex-obsessed all these songs are. What is it doing to this younger generation to have their ears filled with a steady diet of such ugly dreck?
Okay, rant over.

I watched the Video Music Awards on MTV last night with my daughter. I was trying so hard not to sound like the old fogey parent who's always complaining "I don't know what's wrong with music these days!" but I really cannot bear Rhianna or Chris Brown or Lady Gaga or Nicky Menaj -- they just seem like clowns to me who make a lot of tuneless noise. In comparison, I am almost grateful for artists like Pink and Taylor Swift and Frank Ocean who change up the relentless loud harsh vibe.
With youngsters in the house, I can't bury my head in the great music of the 60s and 70s as I might otherwise like to. But really, folks -- are there no standards left?

No Holly,i think we all lived through the best age of music! Music now is pointless drivel with no style!

I don't normally like to moan about music I hate here, but I can sympathise Holly and 16 - I have no idea what radio station my youngest brother listens to but I've been subjected to it when I've been in my mum's car with him and most of the songs make me cringe. I don't really listen to the radio but some songs are hard to avoid, in shops, on TV etc - that Dizee Rascal song, Bonkers, literally drives me Bonkers, I seem to hear that one a lot!
