I've not been a member of this forum long (only since august 2011) but i've noticed that there are only about 10 regular contributers to the forum and maybe only about half a dozen casual contributers. Out of 587 members that is very, very low. I dont know if we need to change anything or spruce things up a bit but it seems when we get new members they aren't signing up to contribute or if they do its a couple of posts and thats the last we hear of them. So the question is "What can we do to get more people involved actively on this forum?" I know people have commitments -like work- but we all do, but we still make time to contribute something! Any ideas anybody?

I should point out, m4l, that many of those 587 members joined at an earlier time, before any of us showed up here. When we "found" this message board, no one had posted in months. Some of us who had decided to stop posting on Ray's gray board agreed to sign up here instead. The early members have never resurfaced.
Some of the folks who came over with us were very active posters for a while, but then their lives changed. Some of them now post on Facebook or Twitter instead. It seems to be the way of internet message boards; some people just lose interest and stop posting.
Most fan forums that I post on have about the same number of active posters, or even less.
Of course I'd love to have a few more active posters here. But quality is always better than quantity, and we've definitely got quality~

Thank-you for pointing that out Holly. It now makes sense! I'd wondered why we seemed quite a small number of regular contributers but obviously didn't know the history! I agree that the quality is high on this forum and i dont think we want that to change.

Sadly, Ms Holly is correct - Facebook and to a lesser extent, Twitter, has siphoned off the attention of most of the former contributors to this board, Ray's Gray Board and Dave's Board. I find that FB loses the intimacy of these message boards, similar to the effect of seeing Ray/The Kinks at MSG as compared to seeing him/them at the Beacon Theatre. I hope that analogy works for you.

I'd rather it stay as it is and be more intimate rather than 500 trolls vying for attention and causing upset and trouble. I personally love this forum and all of it's members i have spoke to! I just wish i'd found it earlier, but hey-ho i'm here now. So in answer to my immediate question. Nothing needs to change,it's perfect as it is! ;D

the main problem in my view is that there is nothing new regarding the kinks. when ray/dave release new music or tour, or if there is new product coming from the kinks(and i don't mean re-re-re-re-re-issued cd's and box sets), interest goes up on both boards.
a look at ray's board lately just seems to be youtube audio or video of kinks/ray/dave tunes. alot of the video is stuff unseen in the states(bbc tv appearences) and great to watch but the audio is just the songs uploaded from peoples cd collection and the rare bootleg songs(more please). it seems when ray's tour ended alot of folks, myself included have taken a hiatus.

That may be a factor too donl. I think The Kinks popularity is never sky high but does wax and wane sometimes. Like i've said though i would rather the forum stay as it is rather than descend to the depths of some forums i've visited.

i don't think it has to do with their popularity. they are pretty popular among the membership of both boards. its just that like the song says: 'so far poppa i got nothing to say". i wasn't surprised when after rays tour folks took a break. i visit both boards a few times a day just to read and see if there is anything new. believe me when ray tours again and if dave tours things will pick up.

I joined up almost a year ago, while in the process of updating my Kinks collection with the CD versions of my old LPs. That was a period of intense Kinks listening for me, and this board helped me catch up on all things Kinks.
This was the first discussion board I ever joined; I've joined a couple of others since. One of them has a nasty member who lashes out at the others, but this one has a nice vibe. I still check in here every few days to see what's new, and am surprised to see that I've posted 60 times.

I've found in my short time here that we are all different with differences of opinions. But there is no-one here who is nasty and there is a lot of respect for each other. That is all down to the quality control of Holly. And she does a fine job in ensuring that things are kept well. Long may it continue.

I wish I could take credit for "quality control," but aside from banning one member who tended to polarize opinion -- someone I still am friendly with, by the way! -- I haven't done much. (Isn't KinkCan our master of Quality Control, anyway? ) I think on the whole Kinks fans tend to be sensitive and intelligent misfits, which is what drew them to the Kinks in the first place. And that translates into good community members. Kinks fans also tend to have good taste in music, which they like to share with others. Again, you couldn't be a Kinks fan without having broad and eclectic musical tastes -- the Kinks changed their sound so often, even from track to track on one record. On other forums I read, members tend not to be tolerant of other artists' work, but folks here tend to be very generous about enjoying other artists' work. There's no "Kinks or nothing" snobbery here. I like that.

I have to agree with you on the subject of wide ranging musical tastes board members have. I've learnt a lot about other artists i have hardly noticed before and members are always willing to spread the word to other members. I wasn't aware of the history of this forum but now it explains everything as to why we have quite a small core of regular contributers and a few intermittant contributers. I'm more than happy with my position on the forum and have always felt welcomed and valued and that is nice. We have a great bunch of people here who make the forum the great place it is. Long may it continue!!

Hi everyone!
I suggested yesterday in one of the forums (surely the wrong one!) that we try to set up monthly or quaterly meetings with Kinks fans and members of our community in order we exchange ideas, open discussions and bring along our "kinks treasures" . I live in Paris, and i do not know the numbers of french members, but i would like to meet "kinks pals" outside a computer screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any other suggestion more than welcome!

Nice idea in theory but because we all live so far away from each other(Britain,France,Switzerland,U.S.A and Canada among other places) its not going to be at all possible as people have work and financial commitments. Indeed the only member i could see realistically is Sleepwalker24 who only lives about 40 miles away from me so that wouldn't be a problem. Thank goodness for our internet forum,as it brings us all together (Albeit behind a computer screen!!).
