It's hard to choose 7 exactly but the first that come to my mind are
Lennon/McCartney (Ray tops each of them but not both together) Ray Davies Neil Finn Chris Collingwood/Adam Schlesinger John Sebastian Pete Ham John Cale

Nice list. I'm especially happy to see Schlesinger and Collingwood get recognition. I've been on a huge FoW kick lately.
John Sebastian as well. The ratio of great songs per released track is incredibly high with the Spoonful, IMO. So many near-perfect pop songs came out of their work in such a short time.

I couldn't agree more, for many years I had a "best of" and I thought that was all I needed, but when I started to listen to their albums I realized what I had been missing. John's first solo album is brilliant too.

hmmm I couldn't help thinking Paul Simon and Chuck Berry should be up there somewhere, so here's my list... Ray Davies Paul Simon John Lennon Bob Dylan Chuck Berry Townes Van Zandt (if he can be classified as "rock") Elvis Costello (I think everyone reaches a creative peak and he's definitely passed his ) Of the more "current" songwriters, I enjoy listening to M Ward Laura Marling Sufjan Stevens Rennie Sparks from the Handsome Family Nathaniel Rateliff Liz Green Billy Childish (although he has more misses than hits!)

I like when I opened this post. (I would not change anything) I think Lennon and McCartney were so independent and so great in his compositions that he can not be considered half as composers (Jagger & Richards), (Mercury & May), (Water & Gilmour) (Elton John & Bernie Taupin)... Lennon & McCartney had his legacy defined more and were more prolific and others shared their work much between them.
Pd. Lennon & McCartney will not be seen in a Pack (two in one).
