The Independent has an edited extract from Nick Hasted's book You Really Got Me: The Story Of The Kinks (the chapter on "Waterloo Sunset". The book was released in the UK in June, and should be available in the US in November. www.independent.co.uk/arts-entert....gs-2343826.htmlExcellent read! I enjoyed it a great deal!

Just one question -- is there anything new under the sun that hasn't already been written about Ray, Dave and The Kinks? The info in the excerpt was nothing new to me.

Martin, thanks for posting this outstanding excerpt ! I found a few tidbits in there that gave me a fuller understanding of the genesis of Waterloo Sunset. I found the viewers comments below the article interesting as well! Waterloo Sunset is so revered in England; but here in the States it was harly heard at all; coming out as it did during the Kinks 'banned from America' period. That thought is about as sad as the sad state of loneliness one senses from the narrator of this great song!

Just one question -- is there anything new under the sun that hasn't already been written about Ray, Dave and The Kinks? The info in the excerpt was nothing new to me. From what I've read, the information is nothing new, but Halsted's editorial insights into the Kinks seem to please Kinks fans. It is nice to have a sympathetic book written by someone who seems to be a fan, yet doesn't go overboard. Anyway, a new book may help to spread the word about Kinks music to people who hadn't listened much before. There is a large audience out there of people who know nothing about the Kinks.

Has anybody actually read this book? People on the gray board are slamming it as a hack job, and claiming that Ray never talked to Hasted. On one hand, any attention that gets shone on the Kinks is good. On the other hand, do we really need another scandal-mongering biography? I'd love to have some critical input here from someone who has actually read it. Martin, have you?

i am reading it now holly, it is definetly not a hatchet job as the poster who started the thread on the grey board indicated. it is well written(what i have read up to now), and though there are no unknown revelations and we've heard most of the stories it is worth reading. i am half way through it now and am enjoying it. hasted is a kinks fan and it showsw in his writing. i recommend the book. i believe that hasted interviewed ray, dave and mick. if he didn't the book would be loaded with footnotes and a bibliography(i think those are the terms, been a long time since i've been in school). the only negative item i've come across is pete quaife's treatment at the end of his tenure in the band, as told by pete's brother.

Thanks, Don -- I appreciate your take on it. Neonsign showed me her copy the other night and it has a lot of good photos in it too. Looks like I will have to buy it!
