Holly, I'm glad to get a nibble on my David Mead post. I'm currently waiting for his newest CD, "Dudes," to arrive in the mail -- I supported it through Kickstarter. I'd recommend starting with 2004's stripped-down "Indiana" and then 2006's "Tangerine," a bigger production and a real tour de force.
I followed Elvis Costello closely up through "Goodbye Cruel World," but then his knotty lyrics began to repel rather than attract me.

Hollyh do you like Nick Drakes songwriting? I do like Nick Drake, though I haven't heard much -- not that there is much, sadly. You have to wonder what he could have produced had he lived longer. I have heard one Richard Hawley album, but I didn't ultimately like it. I like his voice but his songwriting seemed a bit one-note to me. Perhaps other albums are better. I know he's got a good reputation. Whether or not he deserves to be called "1st class" remains to be seen...

I also fell off the Costello bandwagon about that time, for the same reason. He was really going some personal rabbit-hole at the time, and it touched all those songs. But years later I started listening to him again -- about the time of When I Was Cruel -- and I found that he gotten the old gift back. Then I went back and got all the albums I'd missed and there was lots of great stuff in there. Finally I listened to Goodbye Cruel World again and I couldn't figure out what had put me off in the first place! Now he's back in permanent heavy rotation on my daily playlist.

Thats right hollyh, nick drake had a very short life/musical career and yes it does beggar the question what music was to lie ahead if he had lived. Its also sad that probably 99% of his fans (myself included) only got to know his music after his death .Thanks also for your comments about Richard Hawley.I love him but can also appreciate people have different tastes and it would be a dull world if we all liked the same things ;D

Hmmm, not sure 'Tie me Kangaroo Down Sport' classes as good songwriting! I'd add Kurt Cobain to this list too
