I thought of this idea to start a thread where an artist declares who they are by a factoid about their career. Once the factoid is given, other board members can try to guess 'Who Am I'? Once there is a winner, that member will offer their own 'Who Am I' puzzle.
Additonal factoids (aka clues) can be added if the first one draws blanks!
Knock Knock
Who's There?
Artist: Legendary Sun Records founder Sam Phillips famously said that I am the most gifted musician he ever worked with; and that was a mouthful considering who he worked with !
Who Am I?

I will excuse myself from this first clue, as I know the answer. But, I encourage others to give it a shot. This is an excellent idea for a new thread and I hope you all will take part in it.

Great answer uncleson; but no, sorry !
This makes a good segue for another factoid.
'Sam Phillips told 'me' to go listen to these Jerry Lee Lewis records and learn to play that bad!

Howlin Wolf?

Great answers uncleson and Sleepy, but not the one I was looking for!
Many probably didn't know Howlin' was at Sun either ! JC is in a class by himself at Sun by virtue of his songwriting alone but he wasn't the greatest guitar picker and some of the reason behind what Phillips said was that this fellow was immensely skilled on his instrument, wrote songs for others at Sun and was a skilled writer, and had a mature and extremely versatile voice that made him the whole package from a musicianship standpoint I think !
Perhaps this clue will be the best !
'I was also pleased to know that Elvis Presley was so enamored with my new song that he played it constantly when he met the Beatles'.

Oops Smiley, I had just posted before you! Sorry, no; although I'll make no secret JC is my favorite individual performer of all time ! The guy I'm looking for is immensely underrated (except among critics) and not known for what his truely great gifts were!

Thats partly why I chose JC, John - I know you like him a lot! That and the fact that I'm not very clued up on Sun Records artists I'm sure someone here will guess the correct answer though!
