I love Strangers and Mindless Child of Motherhood. Dave had some of the best songs! I also quite enjoy Holiday Romance, I'm Not Like Everybody Else, and Shangri-La. Too many to choose from. I was just listening to Give The People What They Want and I think that it's such a good, cohesive album.

I think one of the most underrated songs is DRIVING. The song is based on an unique chromatic chords sequence. If you listen to that "easy listening" song you wouldn`t believe it that`s a masterpiece of songwriting-art. The wonderful countrystyle guitar of Dave makes the song so sparkling that you must stomp to the rhythm. But it was in reality hard struggling working to create the song in this splashing and relaxing way. Indeed it`s a real intellectual song!!! Congratulations Ray and Dave.

Excellent choice, Hofner! I've often thought that the chord sequence there sounds like gear shifting in a car. Sometimes the Beach Boys did that too in their early car songs.

I will never hear this song in the same way again. I guess that's what Kinks discussion boards are for!

I will never hear this song in the same way again. I guess that's what Kinks discussion boards are for! Well said Gary. Mr Hofner's summaries of the Kinks library of music is very insightful and interesting as he has, if I remember correctly, taken Rays songwriting class. I've known Mr Hufner for several years online and he's been kind enough to discuss both Ray and Dave compositions to me.

I LOVE Driving – always did and always will. Simply due to the fact that it is a poppy and happy-go-lucky tune combined with thought-provoking lyrics. Ray’s intellect starts to shine through. It was a glimpse of what would expect us later lyrically-wise.
And yes, Hofner participated at Ray’s songwriting class.

Thanks a lot for your credits about my Kinks songs analysis. As some of you know I`ve been a student in two songwriter courses of "master" Ray and I personally talked a lot to him about important musical things to create interesting and as Ray mentioned "intellectual" rockmusic. So be patient with me and allow to do further analysis of Kinks songs. By the way I keep writing songs for several friends who want me to write songs in a Kinks style. They ask me for example. Please write a birthday song for my girlfriend sounding like "Afternoon Tea" and so on. Now I wrote a song about the Kinks Reunion if it should take place at all. Mr Hofner, I do find your analysis of Kinks songs very interesting and insightful I've read that Young And Innocent Days is one of Dave's favorites. In honour of Dave's birthday, would you discuss this wonderful song?

I LOVE Driving – always did and always will. Simply due to the fact that it is a poppy and happy-go-lucky tune combined with thought-provoking lyrics. Ray’s intellect starts to shine through. It was a glimpse of what would expect us later lyrically-wise. Before we leave "Drivin'," let's acknowledge a whole other aspect of its wonderfulness: the work it does as part of the "Arthur" album. Coming after "Yes Sir, No Sir" and "Some Mother's Son," it provides some much-needed upbeat relief. And though I haven't seen the TV production, I'd imagine it advances the plot as well. Finally, in an extra twist of Kinky brilliance, while the song can certainly make us nostalgic for simple pleasures, it is just too exaggeratedly upbeat enough so that it also registers as satire, mocking Arthur for seeking relief from his frustrations in a harmless, sanctioned way. The following song, "Brainwashed," makes it clear that he's been trained all his life to settle for crumbs and not ask for more.
