I've recently decided I want to start collecting Kinks albums. After years of neglecting to buy a single one of their albums, I think it's finally time.
Anyways, in doing some research on Amazon and kindakinks.net, I see that their first three albums have been remastered and were released as deluxe editions on March 28, 2011.
Would it be reasonable for me to assume that this will be done with the other albums?
I just finished up collecting the Beatles stereo remasters, which was a very straight-forward endeavor. The Kinks, on the other hand....
Thanks.

I also just read that Deluxe Editions of 'Arthur..' and 'Something Else' are tentatively slated to be released in June of 2011. I also have read that a Deluxe Edition of 'Face to Face' is planned but I have seen no release date!

If you're just beginning, jrich, I suppose the deluxe reissues are a good way to start. My situation is different. I recently finished acquiring the whole catalog on the 2004 Sanctuary reissues (or maybe they're the 2001 Castle Sanctuary reissues) for the Pye records and the late '90s Velvel reissues for the RCA and Arista records, plus the original releases of the MCA and other records that followed. I also sprung for the 3-disc VGPS.
Now I have to decide whether to upgrade to the new deluxe editions. I don't feel I need to have both mono and stereo versions of the songs, so that's not a big draw. I've looked at the track listings, and there are only one or two songs per release that I don't yet have in any version. The other draw is what everyone says is the improved sound -- but I still have LPs of most of these records, and if I want improved sound I can always listen to those.
I have yet to do a careful comparison, but I think I could do more to augment my collection by getting the "Picture Book" box set next. It seems to have more songs that I don't yet have.
I don't mean to hijack this thread from jrich, but does anyone out there have any advice for me?

Gary, I think the Picture Book boxset would be a great addition to your collection, I aquired it last year and its an excellent comprehensive set covering important songs from all decades of The Kinks career, spread over 6 discs I personally haven't upgraded to the new deluxe Kinks albums so I can't really comment on those Jrich, John made a good suggestion with the deluxe 3Cd edition of VGPS, the 3rd disc is made up of rarities, including some songs from unofficially released Great Lost Kinks album

Gary, I have the Picture Book boxset and all the original Castle remasters; and I don't intend to get the Deluxe reissues right now. At least, not the first three! I'll have to see what's on Face to Face, Arthur, Something Else and any others that might be released in deluxe format to determine if those would be enticing to me.
Jrich, please follow sleepwalker's advice and get the 3CD deluxe version of VGPS; if any deluxe edition is essential, I think it is that one!

Hey, John! I don't want to steal your (Johnny) Thunder! ;D You were the one that suggested the VGPS 3CD set to Jrich before me I agree with you, the deluxe edition of VGPS is well worth getting

After posting this I did come across the slated release of Arthur and Something Else, as well as the Village set from '09.
I'll have to weigh things out. The one thing I noticed that REALLY bugs me about the deluxe sets is that at $20-$30 a pop, I would expect whoever put these together to at least show enough respect to not obscure the cover art.
A big "Deluxe Edition" banner across the bottom of the cover is something I find almost insufferable.
Thanks for the input guys!

Well you'll be pleased to know that the 3CD version of VGPS doesn't have that banner across the front! It just says Special Seluxe Edition in very small writing on the side of the set

I should note that the Kinks changed record labels a few times, while the Beatles did not -- so it's less likely that we'll ever get a really comprehensive career-spanning set like the Beatles Remasters. I'd be surprised if the entire catalog gets remastered. I'd imagine only up through Muswell Hillbillies...

That's a good point Holly, especially since the band became a "non-factor" on the selling charts in the mid 70's. The MUCH LOVED, by this KinKs fan, Preservation - School Boys LP's, by RCA, I'm sure will be slated last for a remaster. But, their is always hope that Ray will do it for us die-hards someday! (someone may have to put a bug in his ear!) Me thinks the best way to actually do that, would be to put the 4 concept LP's together in a box set like The Picture Book. Now that would be something to buy!

I just picked up the 2-disc deluxe edition of Disraeli Gears today, and it had an identical banner across the bottom of the cover. I did happen to notice that it was just a clear exterior sleeve over the album art, and is removable. This is what you mean? I'm going to assume that the Kinks sets are the same. By the way, any of you who are Cream fans should pick up that Disraeli Gears set, it's incredible. Disc 1 is stereo, disc 2 is mono; the bonus tracks are phenomenal. There's an outtake of "We're Going Wrong" on disc 1 that absolutely blows away the album version, I think it might be the best track they've ever recorded. The artwork included is absolutely amazing, as well.

That's kinda odd, considering they just reissued Dark Side of the Moon a couple of years ago. I'm hoping they will issue mini-LP packaging? I'd love to see them do this with their entire catalog, I'd starve for a week to pay for a deluxe edition of Meddle.
