Congratulations Sleepwalker! You picked up Ray's lovely old mercedes from my brother today. Hope you got home ok. Really sad to see the old girl go ~ by the way, her name is Lola, well that's what I always called her anyway! : ) My brother really didn't want to let her go, but sadly 'needs must' as they say. I couldn't bring myself to watch her go today, I'm really sad to see her go too, but just like my brother, I'm really happy that she's gone to someone who will really love her & appreciates how special it is to own a little piece of memorabilia from the great Ray Davies. We've grown up listening to and loving his music, he is a true legend & a great man. After your offer, it didn't seem right to sell it to anyone else, & although she was flying high on ebay, who knows what she would have ended up fetching, sometimes it's more important that the right person gets to own such a precious thing. Good luck with her & let us know how she goes. Bye Lola, you will be missed!

Thank you so much for your interesting and insightful posting, Jane. I enjoyed reading it a great deal, one can deduce that you and your brother are dedicated followers of The Kinks! Looking forward to your further contributions. Have a great day!

So glad you like the car sleepwalker....I still can't believe it broke down 2 minutes after me selling it to you...That cars got soul and it didn't want to leave me!!!!Remember the film Christine about an old car that was posessed!!! You're probably too young to remember that film, but you can probably watch it on 10starmovies on the web and you'll understand. Take good care of that car and if you have any problems with it I may be able to point you in the right direction. I know a thing or two about 190 mercs and my advice is free to you. If that car doesn't give you the incentive to pass your driving test, I don't know what will!!! Get it done!!!!...or at least get your provisional licence and you can drive it on L-plates. The right pedal goes, the left pedal stops, and the round bit in front of you turns left and right....Easy!!!!!! And if you don't use it much, make sure you at least start it regularly and run it up the road and back to keep the engine and gearbox lubricated and the brakes from sticking. Good luck with the car...I'm sure you'll love it...good job the insurance is cheap 'cause the petrol certainly isn't!!!!Ripped off by the government again, so they can still drink 30 year old brandy in the house of commons and make ridiculous expenses claims!!! Take care...and by the way, the cars' name is Lola! I hope it isn't Christine!!! Watch the film if you haven't seen it.

Hello Jane Reading your post made me feel a little sad as you and Nick obviously really loved Ray's car and were sad to see it go Its funny that you say she's called Lola as my mum suggested calling her that. Now I know that IS her name I will definately stick with it I could see that Nick was sad to let it go but I hope he's glad that its gone to someone who appreciates the history of the car and who'll really look after it! Your right about Ray being a true legend and a great man! I know the bids were going up on eBay and I was quite suprised to get my offer accepted - I think Nick just knew how much I wanted it! Its going into the garage on Tuesday to get a few things done, nothing serious so hopefully it will all get sorted out and pass the M.O.T Of course I'm happy to give you and Nick updates whenever you like! Please check into the forum now and then or send me a PM, I can tell that you loved that car Jane - and I promise that I'll always take care of it!

Hello Nick We were pretty suprised about the whole breaking down thing but it really wasn't your fault! We could tell that you felt bad and you went out of your well to help us by doing everything you could to sort it out! It worked out ok in the end! Shame about the M.O.T but it didn't fail on anything major, we've booked it into a garage for Tuesday and hopefully we'll get those few little problems sorted out. We loved driving it back to Yorkshire, with the windows down and The Kinks blasting out from the stereo - heaven! We had no probs with it on the way home, it was all fine I'm sorry that you had to let her go I know you must have loved this car but I promise you that I'll take good care of it always! Thanks so much for the offer of free advice Nick - its good to know we've got someone to ask if we have any minor problems! We are a bit confused by the sun-roof - can't work out how to open it! So maybe you can tell us! Pete's using it for work until we get his car back - I've told him that he better take real good care of it! After that it will stay at my house and will definately be driven at least twice a week, with petrol prices we might have to stick to that But your right about the insurance - that was a really good deal! Thanks for telling me how to drive the car Nick! I really do hope I'll be able to drive it myself one day, but for now I shall enjoy being driven As I said to your sister, please drop into the forum now and again, I'll always be happy to give you updates and let you know how she's getting on. BTW - I have seen Christine! (Love the old horrors) I don't mind Lola having a mind of her own but I'm sure she'd have a nice personality, not like Christine! Thanks for reminding me of that film though - haven't seen it in ages! Take care Nick and good luck with your upcoming interviews!

Hi again emma, The sunroof switch is on the dashboard by the air vents where the cracked plastic panel is. I think the rear window/mirror de-mist switch is on there also. The sunroof slides back, but I think it is supposed to tilt as well, I never took the switch apart, but it probably needs cleaning out on the contacts. The switches on older mercs are notorious for not working, especially the windows, but they just pop out and all that is in there is two springs, two ball bearings and two contacts. They are really easy to take apart and clean, so if the windows or any other rocker switches stop working, this will be the problem. sometimes you can spray them with WD40 and they will work, but don't be worried about taking the switches out to clean them. They are really simple to do. The sunroof does work and you can get the plastic dash panel from a scrapyard. It's only held in with 4 screws. Just pop the vents out of their housings and you will see the screws. There is a guy selling brand new dash panels on e-bay, but he's asking £45 for them. You're better off going to the scrappy for stuff as it's cheaper. If you need parts like the rear dampers, or service parts, go to GSF car parts. They are by far the cheapest and usually have anything you need in stock for 190 Mercs. I should think the rear dampers that it failed the MOT on will be around £30 for a pair. Maybe less, depending on which ones you buy. Other than that, these cars are bullet-proof if you keep an eye on the oil and water etc. Hope this helps. Cheers Nick

I'll be sure to show this info to Pete as I'm sure he'd be much better at following your instructions then I would be! You obviously know your stuff! It will be nice to have the sun roof down while the weathers good (although it rained terribly yesterday) We'll let you know how the repairs go on Tuesday, and the outcome of the next MOT. Hopefully that should all go well. Thanks again for the info Nick, its good to have advice from someone who knows what they're talking about
