By the way, the best Plimsouls purchase you can make is the Rhino release 'The Plimsouls...Plus' which collects their first classic album, another ep, and some rarities! It's always been out of print and exceedingly pricey, unfortunately! If you had that, and their later single 'A Million Miles Away' that they are most known for you'd have a great collection! I'll post more Plimsouls for sure! Peter Case was in the earlier power pop band the Nerves, who gave the world 'Hanging On the Telephone' that Blondie covered so successfully!

I picked something other than the obvious by the Knack. This was a nice find for me!
17. One Day At a Time - The Knack
The Romantics were a rocking band out of Detroit, Michigan who dropped their debut self titled record in late 1979. The ubiquitous 'What I Like About You' and their rocking cover of 'She's Got Everything' lied within! In power pop circles, it was this semi ballad that became a classic of the genre! This is an alternate version from the original but is all that I can find right now!
18. Tell It To Carrie - The Romantics

We are also HUGE Badfinger fans. My Hubbies fav song of ALL time is "Baby Blue," mine would be "Day after Day!" Kevin is rehearsing Baby Blue with his vocal coach at this very moment. Pete Hamm had an amazing voice. His story was so heartbreaking as was the entire fate of Badfinger. Their classic LP's "Straight Up, Wish you were Here and No Dice" are something every rocker should have in the collection. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the Romantics, live -- what a fun band in concert. They played our Summer festival just last year and they still got it! I have a mild dislike for The Knack only because Of "My Sharona." I'm sure you all understand.

Yep, those are awesome Badfinger albums Smiley! Day After Day is one of my favs of all time too, btw! The Romantics; the drummer Jimmy Marinos used to sing some of the leads along with guitarist Wally Palmar; ie he sang lead on 'What I Like About You' as you can see in the video! They had an album in 2003, 61/49, with Blondie drummer Clem Burke pounding the skins. It's the last I've heard from them! This one needs little introduction! The classic Nick Lowe cut with new wifey, Johnny Cash's stepdaughter Carlene Carter in the video and someone takes a finger to the cake if I recall correctly! I've always loved Carlene so I might have been a wee bit jealous watching this! 19. Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe Here's one from an Illini institution about girls 'round this way! 20. Southern Girls (live in 1978) - Cheap Trick

Adam Schmitt came on the scene in 1991 as grunge and Nirvana were hitting the scene with a critically acclaimed power pop gem titled 'World So Bright'. He followed that up in 1993 with Illiterature, which contained this fan favorite!
21. Waiting To Shine - Adam Schmitt

And finally the Raspberries, one of the power pop bands who scaled the heights of the charts in the early 70s. Lead singer Eric Carmen would leave the band and have a nice solo career, with a couple of pretty ballads hits 'All By Myself' and 'Never Gonna Fall In Love Again' and chart on into the later 80s (Hungry Eyes). I didn't go with the obvious Raspberries tune, 'Go All The Way', but a, well even more of a rocker!
22. I'm A Rocker - The Raspberries
This completes my first volume of the power pop series!

Here's a great band's tribute to one of the leading lights of power pop, Alex Chilton of Big Star (and earlier, of blue eyed soul band The Box Tops).

I'm glad you liked the songs I posted John I recommend that you do look into the Primitives music further. You can get the Best Of The Primitives Cd I mentioned really cheaply on Amazon. Its a pretty comprehensive Cd and has some great catchy songs on it, making it a good introduction to their music Thankyou for the info about the Plimsouls. I did actually check out the Cd that you mentioned and your right - it is really expensive! :-/I'll be sure to check out further video's by them that you post though:) And thanks for mentioning Hanging On The Telephone - I didn't even realise it was a cover! I watched the recent video's you posted this afternoon - great selections! I was intrested to watch The Knack vid as the only thing I can recall by them is My Sharona! That song was sure different and I thought it sounded pretty good I just loved The Romantics track you posted! :DApart from their cover of She's Got Everything (which I know you posted a while ago and encouraged me to watch ) I'm not familiar with their music. I'd like to hear more! I also really enjoyed the Alex Chilton track you posted! I thought I'd add a couple more things - Since I mentioned The Primitives I thought I'd post another great track by them, I'd definately recommend that you listen to this one if you get chance! The Primitives - Way Behind Me After watching Nick Lowe's Cruel To Be Kind video ( ) I was reminded of the great cover Letters To Cleo did of that song. The song features in the film 10 Things I Hate About You Letters To Cleo - Cruel To Be Kind I also loved their cover of the Cheap Trick song, I want You To Want Me, which also features in the same film Letters To Cleo - I Want You To Want Me And finally I'll add a classic! The Bangles - Manic Monday

Great thread, John! As you know, I'm a huge fan of most of these bands. I am a Big Star fan (loooove Alex Chilton's voice!) and as you know, Marshall Crenshaw is one of my favorite artists ever. Highwater mark indeed!
I'd like to mention two more bands that to me really embody power pop:
Teenage Fan Club:
And Flamin' Groovies:
And a more recent band that I think inherit the power pop mantle -- Fountains of Wayne:
And a shout-out to the delightful Bill Lloyd:
BTW I have an interesting book called Shake Some Action by John M. Borack subtitled "The Ultimate Power Pop Guide" -- it traces the history of the genre and really digs up some obscure but wonderful little power pop bands!

Gosh, how I love that Flaming Groovies LP. I gotta break it out and listen to it now -- on vinyl!!! ALso a big Raspberries fan, much to the distain of my hubbie. He thinks they're too wossie. BUT he likes the Lovin' Spoonful (:-P) and HE calls the Raspberries wimpy -- me thinks NOT!
Love Fountains of Wayne, but Interstate Managers did not thrill me. My fav has to be Utopia Parkway.

Thanks Holly! It's good to see you check into this thread! 'Shake Some Action' was on the second cd I made; it's a standard for sure! Thanks for the Fountains of Wayne and Bill Lloyd videos! I think I menioned them both on the thread. Bill could be in a cowpunk thread too! I remember like yesterday when Fountains of Wayne's tune 'Radiation Vibe' came out and was a hit on Modern rock; but they were called one hit wonders after 'Stacy's Mom' became so ubiquitous! Teenage Fanclub; I haven't heard much by them (love your video) but they had a pretty big profile in the press and thanks for correcting my oversight Holly! Sleepwalker, thanks for your contributions. I'm gonna try to take some time so I can watch all the additional videos here!

I started a thread in Other Artists about Will Owsley. Sadly, he died last year, but his first album remains a high water mark for modern power pop. He was from my home state of Alabama. Here is one of my favorites from his debut CD:

Tim, thanks for mentioning Owsley! We've mentioned his recent tragic passing a few times on the board. Really sad. I think he did win a production Grammy for his first album but it's sad how he ended up touring with some commercial fluffy artists to pay the bills at the end of his life!

Jellyfish was the ultimate 90's power pop band, such an underrated band with amazing harmonies. Many modern power pop bands take their cues from Jellyfish. Here is one of my favorites from them, off their fantastic album Bellybutton.
