mine is close to uncleson's
Janis Joplin Grace Slick Stevie Nicks Debbie Harry Nancy and Ann Wilson (Heart)
i am also quite fond of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson (of the B-52's) and Johnette Napolitano (of Concrete Blonde).
all in all, i rarely listen to female singers. i've often said it's not that i don't enjoy female voices, it's that i don't enjoy most of the song/style choices that female singers often make. i know i am female so it sounds terrible saying this, but i think the majority of female singers perform pathetic "girlie" songs that don't interest me one bit.

Stevie Nicks... forgot her on my list. I went to the Lilith Fair ("[white] women in music") a couple of years back, so I have a sense of what your'e talking about. It was refreshing to hear Hole. I have most of Love's albums and believe she's one of the few women out there singing and writing good hard rock. (Well...how much writing credit goes to her is hotly contested, but she can write music at any rate. And play her own instrument.) I love Shirley Manson too, but she's just a front woman. What happened? There were more women rocking out in the 60's and 70's then there are now. What about Karen O, does she have a hand in composing or at least arranging? Great voice and style. I only have a few songs on my iTunes. YYY's are on my wishlist.

Let's not forget my girl Bonnie Raitt, who's still out there rocking up a storm! She is one EXCELLENT blues guitarist.
Love Kate and Cindy, too! Nobody has more fun on stage than the B-52s.

I mean "best complete package" -- the combination of voice and what songs she chooses to sing and how well they're arranged and what image she projects and how I feel when I'm listening to her. PJ Harvey, for example, may have intriguing songs but something about her world view depresses me. Same with Fiona Apple -- a little too much of the neurotic victim about her. Beth Orton I do like, but not enough to buy her records. Even though Dusty, Patsy, Billie, and Nina all sing about being heartbroken victims, there's such joy and power in their singing -- which includes range, phrasing, etc. -- that it doesn't depress me. Just listen to the reckless courage of how Patsy flings her voice into "Crazy -- I'm crazy for being without you." That's my idea of a singer. Interesting points about PJ and Fiona. Courtney Love has a sense of humor and she has some clever lyrics, but her worldview is kind of incoherent. She's trying to saddle two sides, grrrrl and girlie. I think it's possible, but she doesn't pull it off. I like what CH had to say, "Remember this is rock. It's not f**k me, it's f**k you."

A friend of mine sent me a 2-disc mix of female singers, mostly of the Lilith Fair variety -- the whine factor was enormous!
But there are a lot of current women jazz singers I do like -- Madeleine Peyroux, Judith Owen, Jane Monheit, and of course Diana Krall. I suppose that's because jazz encourages them to sound sultry and knowing, rather than neurotic and resentful.

There were more women rocking out in the 60's and 70's then there are now. you know, you nailed it. the female rockers of days gone by seemed to have much more substance. nowadays, there is so much fluff. when i read through this entire post, it dawned on me just how many female singers of the 60's and 70's that i have been overlooking. as for more modern singers, you're right, too. Shirley, Courtney, etc. = excellent. i like their strength, good strong wails.

The thing is... the world knows women can do jazz, blues and folk. I want a female Jimi Hendrix. (Well, I don't even know if we'll ever have another male one, but you know what I mean.) BTW... Fiona Apple can do sultry and knowing. This is "Slow like Honey" from Tidal: (The video cuts out a chunk from the song's beginning, but you get most of it.)
