I loved Borat. I thik it was the funniest film out this year. I was prepared, though. I had seen Da Ali G Show, so I was familiar with Cohen's taste for the extreme.

I watched "Infamous" last night, the British biopic about Truman Capote. I loved "Capote" (the American biopic) but I liked "Infamous," too. It focused more on Capote's personal relationships, specifically how we was able to manipulate people to his own ends. It wasn't a hatchet job, though. The film was able to give enough of his background to make him sympathetic. I've always believed that he was a sad figure, desperately doing and saying anything for attention and affirmation. "Infamous" had a terrific cast and was very entertaining while depicting sensitive topics. I thought Daniel Craig and Sandra Bollock were particularly good.

I saw Zodiac tonight -- tremendous. I adored the ever-adorable Mark Ruffalo, and Jake Gyllenhall carried the movie very well. But really, when Robert Downey Jr. is on the screen you don't want to watch anybody else.
Thank god he is working steadily again. He is such an enormous talent, possibly the best actor of his generation. And this is a superb part for him.

I loved it too - I posted on the other board. I agree that Downey Jr. is remarkable in this, and deserves a nomination for his performance. That's saying a lot given that it was an outstanding cast.

The U.S. vs. JOHN LENNON (1hr 36 min) from netflix In honor of blamo: 9/10 It might be a 10/10 but I still can't watch ANYTHING with John without blubbering so I might have missed a few things. Great footage, interviews, soundtrack (of course) and a GREAT sense of the times. Everyone from Tommy Smothers- Bobby Seale-John Dean-FBI guys are featured. Lots of Yoko. Highlights for me:(besides spending 1 hr 36 min with JOHN) was GEORGE McGOVERN speaking repeatedly on John's behalf (it was my 1st political campaign & 1st election but I KNEW I VOTED FOR THE RIGHT GUY!) and G. Gordon Liddy who chillingly reveals the attitude and policies of the Nixon Administration toward John, Yoko, and the entire anti-establishment/counter-culture/hippie/yippie/anti-war/peace movement. And the romantic in me never tires of watching two people so much in love. Hope you see it soon.

I saw "Art School Confidential" last night. Very bleak and misanthropic, but it did have moments that were honest and funny as well. It's based on a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes. (Clowes wrote Ghost World.) I like Clowes a lot, he often makes me uncomfortable but he also makes me think. The extreme shift in tone bothered me, but overall, I thought it was a worthwhile effort.

Thanks to recommendations from Holly and Nic I saw 2 good early-mid 60s British movies. Bunny Lake Is Missing-- this was a good psychological suspense, plus it featured a scene where the Zombies were playing on tv ;D although the Zombies should have been playing Shes Not There This movie really had me starting to question my own perceptions and sanity.... which was cool. I started to feel like one of the characters. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. Once the denouement came the movie just sort of got silly in a b-movie kind of way. Saturday Night And Sunday Morning-- I thought this was superb. I usually don't care too much for Albert Finney (I just never liked him in Tom Jones and thought he was all wrong for that part) but he was excellent and perfect for this movie. This is one gritty movie, just the way I like them, and has a lot of shocking material for the year it was made. I loved the interior monologues and wished there were more of them. Hearing the character rail against the man and society really added to the action in the movie. I liked them both and never would have seen them without the help of holly and nic thanks

This past weekend I went to see Blood Diamond. My wife cried from the first scene to the last. She can't see children being abused and ther's a lot of that. I thought it was OK and made the point very well. A little bit too unrealistic in the action scenes: Di Caprio just runs through fire and explosions like Rambo, getting rid of hundreds of bad guys who always mss him.

... although DiCaprio has grown into a very good actor, don't you think? ;D Any critiques on the Oscar Winners.. I only managed to see the animated ones (kids -- ha) and Little Miss Sunshine, which was a twisted, brilliant little film. Happy Feet was my least favourite of the animated films, but Robin Williams stole the show, as usual. Everyone seemed to love the Queen and Last King of Scotland. Dream Girls too.

I think Di Caprio is a great actor. In "The Departed" he is unbelivable. I really like the guy, and he does a good job in Blood Diamonds too. It's just what happens in the film sometimes which put me off a bit, not that he didn't do it well. I agree with the Oscar for best film and best foreign film. Both great films. I've already recommended it in this board, but I'll do it again: Go watch the German movie "The Life of Others" (Not "Others peoples lives" as Seanie pointed out to me). For best actor and actress I can't say, I haven't seen the Idi amin movie, or the UK Queen movie. I thought Di Caprio was tremendous in Departed, and he wasn't even nominated, I think. I'm glad A. Arkin got it for best suporting actor. It's the least that wonderful movie deserved.
