Surfing page 50, and that tiny Fiat 600 post by Imaginary Man-I had one in '66 as my first car, dark blue. Top speed about 60, blew five head gaskets and could take the engine apart alone in about an hour. I drove mine on the So California freeways and sold it for $125. The day after I sold it, the lady called me, the head gasket blew, so I put in a new one free. I could get a big Fender amplifier in the back seat of that car, and my guitar in the passenger seat, but no room for an 8 track player. Went to my high school prom in it. Traveling first class.

The Answer is Always Yes by Monica Ferrell! Fireworks of language on every page. Fantastic characters and story. I couldn't put it down. Her book of poetry, Beasts for the Chase, is due out this fall and has been selected by Jane Hirshfield, one of the best zen poets, to win a big poetry award. P.S. Thanks for all the good wishes for sis. I will pass them along. Same Q.

I am in page 1001, of "2666" by Roberto Bolaño. Bolaño is probably the greatest writer in the Spanish language of the past ten years at least. He was born in Chile, partly bred in Mexico wher he started writting, and emigrated when still a young man to Barcelona. Here he worked in menial jobs for years while strugling to get his stuff published. Eventually he achieved critical and comercial success, only to die five years ago at the age of 50. A very prolific writer, his final books - Los Detectives Salvajes, and 2666-, are works of a totally superior status. Complete breakthrough, original, innovative, very personal stuff. Not always an easy read, Bolaño is complex and so is his writting; open literature with a revolutionary concept of structure. The first one has been translated into English -"The Savage Detectives". I marvel at this feat since I cant really see how his explosive slang can ever be turned into anything else; but in any case I haven't had a look at this translation, so I can't really say wether it's worthwhile or not. In any case I've checked, and it's in amazon. L

Not boring at all -- it's just that his novels aren't really known over here.
I've been reading Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence. The first time I read it I loved it, the second time I read it I thought it was a load of rubbish. This time around I love it again. Go figure.
Q Are you taking a summer vacation this year -- and where?
