It's really good to see us come so far But haven't we forgotten who we are Taking out a larger loan Equity relief and mortgages We all seem to pass the time of day Online at the internet café And if you forget my face In case you've forgotten just who I am I'm the kid with the greasy spoon Firmly held in my hand

in fact this song is so good you can't disect its parts the whole thing is Ray's greatest lines;
"This is the age of machinery, A mechanical nightmare, The wonderful world of technology, Napalm, hydrogen bombs, biological warfare,
This is the twentieth century, But too much aggravation It's the age of insanity, What has become of the green pleasant fields of Jerusalem.
Ain't got no ambition, I'm just disillusioned I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here. My mama said she can't understand me She can't see my motivation Just give me some security, I'm a paranoid schizoid product of the twentieth century.
You keep all your smart modern writers Give me William Shakespeare You keep all your smart modern painters I'll take Rembrandt, Titian, Da Vinci and Gainsborough,
Girl we gotta get out of here We gotta find a solution I'm a twentieth century man but I don't want to die here.
I was born in a welfare state Ruled by bureaucracy Controlled by civil servants And people dressed in grey Got no privacy, got no liberty Cos the twentieth century people Took it all away from me.
Don't wanna get myself shot down By some trigger happy policeman, Gotta keep a hold on my sanity I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna die here.
My mama says she can't understand me She can't see my motivation Ain't got no security, I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here.
This is the twentieth century But too much aggravation This is the edge of insanity I'm a twentieth century man but I don't wanna be here." RAYMOND DOUGLAS DAVIES

"Living in a world where the flesh is cheap. Body touches body but it's only skin deep. I can hold you in my arms every time that you weep But we've lost that emotional flow" Raymond Douglas Davies

"God made the heaven and the deep blue sea But man picked the flowers and he pulled up the trees God made the moon and the rain and the sun But man made the money and the bombs and the guns So we're all animals, too But you're locked up in a zoo And you look at me and I look at you " - Raymond Douglas Davies

"Somehow you feel that the world's been passin' you by. Can't help thinkin' somehow they're living a lie. Now I'm asking questions, I never thought I'd ask them before, Like "why" or "how" or "what am I doing it for?" - Raymond Douglas Davies

Is there life after breakfast full of possibilities Is there life after breakfast? Yes there is, after breakfast So don't live in agony Is there life after breakfast? Yes there is

"Days went by, I walked around dressed in a disguise. I wore a mustache and I parted my hair, And gave the impression that I did not care, But oh, the embarrassment, oh, the dispair. Came the day, helped with a few large glasses of gin, I nervously mounted the stage once again, Got through my performance and no one complained, Thank God I can go back to normal again. I went to that old café, Where I had been in much happier days, And all of my friends were there, And no one cared. Say what they may, all of my friends were there. Not just my friends, but their best friends too. All of my friends were there, Now I don't care" Raymond Douglas Davies

One of my favourites from VGPS the real funny thing is this story may or may not have been true when Ray wrote it but it came to be true a few years later at a very infamous NYC show in 1971 at Philharmonic Hall..I was there for that and it was one of the all time great rock and roll moments in my life...! I have told the story many times before on all the internet sites, and in the kps digests, if you can;t find it let me know. back to Ray's greatest lines; "If there isn't any sunshine We'll sunbathe by the neon sign And if we can't see any stars at night We'll sit and watch the traffic lights. If there isn't any day-time I've got an imitation dawn, I've got a simulated sunshine Standing underneath the neon sign."
