Yes,I'd wish they'd release it on DVD too,its really good I did manage to get Starmaker on DVD a while back although the DVD is definately a copy. The picture quality is'nt great but the sound quality is good. It also has a documentary about the Kinks - 'I'm Not Everybody Else' and some live performances which are all good sound and picture quality so all in all not a bad purchase.

Yes, woulnd't that be great? A proper release by the BBC would be the next logical step. The market is there.

The market certainly is there Martin,I'm sure most of us on here would love to own a copy if it was brought out on DVD If the Come Dancing Musical doesn't or never gets released on DVD which would have a much bigger market then The Long Distance Piano player I doubt we will ever see an official release. This is one of many things under Ray's bed that probably will never see the light of day but at least it got out this far.

Ray Davies stayed at The Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley when they filmed the programme , my late father who was a night porter , remembers him ringing down to reception and ordering a drink , my dad took him the drink to his room. He daid they did a lot of the filming in Sipton.

Ive no idea what he ordered, lol, I wish I had asked my dad, his favorite Kinks song was always "Sunny Afternoon ". My mum and dad always lived In Ilkley , he said Ray gave him a tip and was "very nice".
I watched the film today for the very first time, its typical of the sort of "Kitchen sink dramas " at that time . I enjoyed also in a nostalgic sort of way I think ,wondering what my dad made of it when it was released. At the time ,I was very small and my dad was watching the sort of films like "Long distance piano player ", "Kes" etc , . I do think we have lost something these days , I think those sort of films were symbolic of their day and highlited certain backgrounds and cultures that have long gone. It was good to see Ray taking a part like that, The Kinks song "Village green "is the sort of the thing I mean , looking back , for me its about tombolas etc, a sort of heritage , like "The long distance piano player ", the working class background , the rain in the final scenes , its all depressing but in a good way !

Manaja, I started a thread recently dedicated to the many songs that Ray mentions tea in, so I like to think that he might have ordered tea! ;D Your dad picked a great Kinks song as his favourite! I really enjoyed the Long Distance Piano Player the first time I watched it, Ray is a pretty good actor! Yes, despite being a younger fan I find the whole VGPS album really noistalgic. It always makes me think of the little village I grew up in

Manaja, I like your analysis of Ray's music and films preserving a certain slice of British heritage. I recently spent some time listening to the Village Green Preservation Society album (consoling myself for having missing the recent South Bank show ) and I agree that it has a lot to do with the kitchen sink dramas of the time. I think we often forget what a reader Ray is and how literary his outlook is.
