Rock n' Roll came from the slaves singing gospel in the fields. Their lives were hell and they used music to lift out of it, to take them away. That's what rock n' roll should do - take you to a better place.

I think it's ridiculous to try to sell records to teenagers, because teenagers don't buy my records. And there ain't that many teenagers out there in the marketplace.

Yep, it is uncleson ! It's in the new issue of American Songwriter magazine! I agree with it wholeheartedly too; the percentage of his self written songs that became classics and standards in their field is virtually unparalleled! He was in the first class of inductees in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970; he might've been the first!

As the writer, you're always a presence in the song. If you get close to what human beings are like, you're writing about common experience. We all do much the same things, so if you nail somebody, then you've also nailed yourself.
