Shelby Lynne - Mother

Thanks for posting that, Martin. That Lennon song must have extra poignance for Shelby. Her father -- an abusive alcoholic -- shot and killed her mother and then himself when Shelby was only 17. She and her younger sister Alison (who's now married to Steve Earle) had to move in with relatives. Sad story. I really admire her as an artist and love to see her getting more and more critical attention.

They're from Monroeville, AL and I think were living in the Mobile area around the coast when that sad incident occured. Allison was actually the first to draw wide notice with her Academy Award nomination for 'A Soft Place to Fall' from the movie 'The Horse Whisperer' (from 1998 album 'Alabama Song'); although I knew of Lynne from back around 1993 when she was doing promotion of her single 'Slow Me Down' on the tv circuit such as The Nashville Network and CMT. I really liked 'Slow Me Down'; they played the video a lot. I actually prefer Allison as her voice is incredibly deep and smokey and very Alabama! She had some low charting mainstream country hits and a top 20 hit duet with Kid Rock called 'Picture'; Rock and Sheryl Crow oddly cut the same song at about the same time and had a bigger hit! Moorer added a bonus track to her 2000 album 'The Hardest Part' called 'Cold Cold Earth' that was actually a continuation of the last track; a chilling account of that murder/suicide! I couldn't find that track on the tube, unfortunately! I think back about 10 years ago when a message board friend from California told me Allison told him after a concert to 'tell BamaJohn I said HI; I wish I could get back home soon'! Of course, Shelby won a Best New Artist Grammy about 13 or so years after she cut her first record!

Since then I am a big fan of her and do own all her records. Shelby is fantastic!

I really like this version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" by Wall of Voodoo. They did Cash long before Cash was "rediscovered" by the "cool" crowd. I saw them perform at the University that I was attending at the time...
