There are probably at least 20 or so that make my "top five" on any given sunny afternoon, rainy day in june, full moon or stormy sky, or walking through a wall of fire. Here are five for this moment:
Here comes the sun We can work it out You've got to hide your love away She's a woman In my life
Here are five more for the next moment.
Lady Madonna Eleanor Rigby Across the universe Back in the USSR Penny Lane

Curious Did the Kinks cover any Beatles tunes? I cant think of any?
1. Rocky Raccoon 2. I'm looking through you 3. Real love 4. Dear Prudence 5. Baby your a rich man
but theres so many that can be in this 5
Most after the Beatlemania days were good or better before 66 was all commercial rubbish like please please me love love me do, was to please parents and girls alike (let the cash roll in) UNLIKE our KINKS with their pure RnB to start with and utter unique style of song writing and in your face lyrics even their soppy ones were something different and beautiful (it's a shame for example) only The Zombies at the time did love songs as no others did I bet if I asked whats ya fave KinKs tune? You'd change it every day and mean it unlike the beatles, true say ahe?
Sorry babbling on Have a great kinkily day

Curious Did the Kinks cover any Beatles tunes? I cant think of any? Hi Clatty! I don't think so, but they covered some songs the Beatles also covered like Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally. I think it was in the 1981 tour that they sung an excerpt of Get Back during Back To Front, but I guess this can't be considered a cover either. The closest we have to The Kinks covering The Beatles is Dave's terrific version of George Harrison's Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth).

another days 5 favorite Beatles songs
1. A Hard Days Night 2. Nowhere man 3. I need you 4. Two of Us 5. Lady Madonna
And a comment about cover songs. I never heard the Kinks cover the Beatles, in concert, tape, record, or CD.
But I think the early Kinks single "You Still Want Me" sounds more in the style of early Beatles than early Kinks. And the final notes of "Somebody Stole My Car" are, I think, a musical reference to the Beatles "Drive My Car". If you listen to the closing seconds you will see what I mean. Ted

Perhaps this is heresy, to have a thread like this on a Kinks board. Still, with all the new remastered CDs coming out, plus the new Rock Band game, the Beatles are very much in the air at the moment. So if we can tear ourselves from the Kinks for a moment..... 1. If I Fell 2. For No One 3. Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite 4. Oh! Darling 5. Love Me Do I just happened on this thread now... I was at college when John Lennon was shot, I was already in a state of depression because I'd made the mistake of quitting the basketball team to "study" (that was the one year in which my academic performance slumped, ironic? well, no, the expression sophomore slump must have some basis!). I still clearly remember the day of hearing the news, I was weeping desperately (literally rocking back and forth on the floor, as if John Lennon had been a member of my family, a loved one) and my roommate, like many other friends at the time, was very supportive. That day, the 8th of December 1980, I called up the college radio station and asked them to play If I Fell....which they did, I thought it was a relatively unknown song that I personally loved, but seeing it at the top of this list just brought back so many emotions! I may not agree with the other choices, but If I Fell...the beautiful melody, simplicity of the lyrics, John's voice... Tonight on TV there was a NEW Citroen commercial and there was John Lennon, circa 1970 I think, they obviously bought the rights: I was mesmerized like in the old days, apart from the fact that I love that accent...only Ray Davies has a similar effect on me!

BTW, there's no way I could list my top/favourite 5 or 10 Beatles songs, any more than I could list my favourite Kinks songs (and I'm still waiting for a delivery of albums I'm not familiar with, dating from the 1980s, but suspect that what I already know cannot be surpassed)

I was watching Monday Night Football when legendary sportscaster, Howard Cosell, was the first in the world to break the news of John Lennon's death. It's amazing what can be found on Youtube... Strangely enough, Cosell interviewed Lennon on Monday Night Football just 6 years prior to his murder...

I've just reread some of these choices (and apologize for my outburst...when I saw "If I Fell" it just took me right back to that day in 1980); I think I'd still put that song among my favourites...I can't really name favourite songs, only favourite albums and that would be Rubber Soul (but the U.S. release I once had ...with It's Only Love and I've Just Seen a Face) and Revolver probably, yes I loved Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road...Hard Day's Night, never cared for the White Album, though, so I'm always surprised to see lots of people saying it's their favourite. Personally, I think VGPS, released at the same time, is infinitely superior...
