I was just looking through my kollecktion, and it struck me that after Village Green, the only front cover photo that shows the whole band is State of Confusion. Muswell Hillbillies shows all 5 guys, but you have to fold it out to see Ray, John Dalton, and John Gosling; Lola V Powerman has just that composite drawing of the four faces; and Preservation Act 1 has such a huge crew of performers in it, it's not at all clear who's in the core band, especially since the instruments they're holding have no relation to what they play. From then on the covers tend to have artwork or, increasingly, just Ray's picture. I can only imagine how popular that made him with his brother. Notice how on Phobia the photo shows just Ray AND DAVE -- maybe Dave finally made a stink about it? My favorite BTW:

I really like the Face To Face and Arthur covers. I don't have it in front of me, but I thought the Misfits cover was a combination of Ray and Dave.

Okay, now I've stared at Misfits for about five minutes and you're probably right, uncleson. I think that makes it even more creepy.

Wonder how Dave got out of having to wear the silly hat like the others had to! ;D Do you suppose that's really Dave on the cover of Sleepwalker, underneath that Ray mask?

Do you suppose that's really Dave on the cover of Sleepwalker, underneath that Ray mask? That almost sounds incestuous. For its simplicity and clever play on the album's title, I'll go with "Think Visual". A close 2nd would be the the UK issue of their first album, "The Kinks".

I think their covers haven't normally been at the level their brilliant albums deserved.
Anyway, I love Kontroversy, Face To Face, Misfits, The Road, Phobia and the US version of To The Bone.

I'm with Iñaki, I believe in general Kinks artwork has not been at the same level as their art.
Having said this, Muswell Hillbilies and Preservation II are marvellous and my favorites. I also think Lola and Soap Opera are very cool.
