Hello:

Has anybody else been enjoying the new 180 Gram vinyl re-releases of all the
Kinks records from Muswell Hillbillies to Word of Mouth? After a slew of
rotten luck, my extremely cool girlfriend recently presented me with every
one of those excellent records. I don't know how much they cost her all
together, but they were worth it. I was cranking Misfits the other day and
I was just floored with the sound compared to my old original skinny, poppy
vinyl. Muswell Hillbillies also sounds dynamite. They all sound great, but
so far those two stood out. I have "Sleepwalker" on tap for tonight after
shoveling the snow here in Milwaukee. Again.

Oh sure, Kinda Kinks is a tremendous album . . . "Don't Ever Change" is a
great piece of pop candy, as is "You Shouldn't Be Sad" (a song that is every
bit as driving as The Who of material of that era). "Something Better
Beginning" is a terrific teen heartache song and should have been covered by
any number of American teen heart-throbs. The two semi-acoustic songs,
"Nothin' In The World Can Stop Me From Worryin' 'bout That Girl" and "So
Long" are maybe some of the best writing Ray has ever done. I've always
wondered why he hasn't done "So Long" in concert it's such a pretty melody
and has the most tender lyrics . . .

Thanks, Ray, for sending the link. I have no idea what "Shapes Have Fangs"
are like, but they at least have commendable taste.

3 Stars Brilliant to bland: beat-poppers collected on six CDs

In 1994, I interviewed Ray Davies. He turned up at Wandsworth Park in a
Nissan Micra, smoking a cigar. Then he flitted from bench to bench,
talking about the tragicomic tale of The Kinks, his brother Dave (they
communicated by fax, unable to meet without conflict), and a career spent
writing .songs for waitresses and divorced people.. Davies didn.t seem
offended that I asked no questions about The Kinks after 1977. His own
autobiography, X-Ray, stopped even earlier, in 1975.

Because it has more expansive parameters, few will sit blissfully through
the entire contents of Picture Book, a 6-CD box set of 137 Kinks tracks
spanning the years 1963.1994. Over those three decades, the brothers from
Muswell Hill (and original bandmates Pete Quaife and Mick Avory) turned
beat-pop on its head, introduced soap opera and vaudeville into
rock.n.roll, and played out their last 15 years as arena-rockers in
America. (Although, as I write, rumours are circulating that they have
re-formed.)

They were launched to 1964 audiences in fruity foxhunters. garb, a fatuous
idea then and now, but their impact on British music (from The Who to The
Jam to Blur) would be anything but ephemeral. Many heavy metal musicians,
furthermore, credit Dave Davies as the guitarist who pioneered their genre
(.You Really Got Me., .All Day And All Of The Night.), while The Kinks
remain one of three bands . the others being The Who and The Pretty Things
. who are synonymous with rock opera (Arthur, Or The Decline And Fall Of
The British Empire). And that.s before they even reached 1970.

The first disc (1963.66) of Picture Book traces the growth of an energetic
Merseybeat-style foursome through their famed sequence of abrasive early
hits (and a proposed-but-cancelled 45, .Don.t Ever Let Me Go.), to the
first evidence that the 21-year-old Ray Davies is developing a more
introspective side to his lyrics and music. .See My Friend., melancholic
and strange, is a clear turning-point for him, while another haunting 1965
number, .There Is A New World Opening For Me., one of several demoes in
this box, spookily anticipates the style (and sound) of Leonard Cohen. The
Kinks didn.t soften overnight, as raunchy workouts like .Milk Cow Blues.
and .Sittin. On My Sofa. demonstrate, but they were getting there.

Discs two (1966.68) and three (1968.71) will be the ones that captivate
and vindicate most Kinks fans, even if they never (itals)quite(itals)
corroborate the increasingly popular viewpoint that The Kinks were better
than The Beatles. Both discs feature a mix of classic hits (.Waterloo
Sunset., .Days., .Victoria., .Lola.), lesser-known singles (.Mr Pleasant.,
.God.s Children.), radio sessions, album tracks and unreleased songs (many
of high quality) which would later be collected on The Great Lost Kinks
Album (1973). The only blemishes are an awful, lo-fi, alternate version of
.Dead End Street., instead of the proper one, and no sign of either .Lazy
Old Sun. or .Wonderboy.. Otherwise: magnificent.

By taking an unfashionable route through the late .60s (no psychedelia or
Eastern mysticism; no screaming Anastasia or crossfire hurricanes), The
Kinks risked alienation and loss of commercial ground, but ensured they.d
be reappraised in future years as intrepid go-it-alone types, full of
idiomatic priorities and Ealing spirit, happy to plonk down roots and
observe unspoken traditions (.Autumn Almanac.), or create a poignant
dialogue between the classes (.Two Sisters., .Shangri-La.). The Kinks Are
The Village Green Preservation Society, which didn.t chart in 1968,
celebrated childhood as a quintessence and England as a museum of
glittering trophies, with a gusto that now seems radical, not parochial.
And if nostalgia-plus-patriotism doesn.t seem a difficult balance for Ray
Davies to get right, remember what happened when John Major tried it 15
years later. Warm beer? Long shadows on cricket grounds? Perhaps he should
have slipped in a line about phenomenal cats.

The Englishness of The Kinks was taken to almost self-negating extremes;
it was as if Davies felt he needed to write songs about one mundane daily
routine after another (brewing a pot of tea; smoking a saucy fellow) in order to
make sense of the national psyche. Things got hopelessly out of hand on
the sprawling Preservation in 1973.4, a satire/rock opera/music-hall folly
that coincided with a serious depression (and suicide attempt) in Davies.s
personal life. Luckily, The Kinks were going through a purple patch as
musicians: their laidback, louche, country-rock grooving on the Muswell
Hillbillies LP (1971) entirely suited the look-to-America horizons of
Davies.s lyrics, and drummer Mick Avory.s lazy triplet entrance on .Here
Come The People In Grey. is a model of just-so impudence.

For all that, however, disc four (1971.77) of Picture Book betrays a
shrewd compiler.s hand. Some albums that it visits were flimsy vehicles
for high-falutin concepts, with clumsy storyboarding that suggested
Davies.s powers were on the wane, but you might not guess it from these 19
selections, a few of which (.Celluloid Heroes., . Face In The Crowd.,
.Sitting In My Hotel.) are pinnacles of his sad-smiling, ballad-writing
art.

Unfortunately, sitting in hotels, and life on the American freeway, were
to make a bland FM travesty of this once delightfully eccentric group.
Despite surviving the punk era, and winning a new Stateside fanbase with
charm-free stodge-rock like Low Budget, it was, by any standards, a
lamentable decline. The vast majority of disc five (1977.81) is like an
endless flight on an alcohol-free aeroplane with a small child kicking the
back of your seat. Disc six (1983.94) is a marginal improvement, once Ray
stops writing in horrible clichs and Dave starts playing like Mike
Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but it.s telling that the
standout song of these 17 . .Living On A Thin Line., from 1984.s Word Of
Mouth . is a D. Davies composition.

Picture Book, in the end, is simply too honest for its own good. .Look how
splendid we were!. it boasts, .and see how turgid we became.. Thank
heavens it.s sequenced in chronological order.

seats Loge Row A seats 102-105 ( front row) center seats. they cost me a

Today is the official UK release day of the Picture Book box set. There
were reports last week of it being already for sale in stores, but there
are other reports this week that its availability is limited due to
Woolworths going into administration (insolvency) and many stores receive
merchandise from the Woolworth delivery vehicles. The box set is also now
available from ordering from the merchandise section of Ray's web site.

[On Ray's site it is #42. #1 is worthy about $1.5 at the present time, so
that's $63. I don't know how much shipping is. They are planning on some contest for people that order it from there. I haven't seen any details yet.

charge more for box sets. But VAT may be subtracted out, so it may be

If you haven't ever listened to the Ready-Steady A-Go-Go, this is the week
to tune in.

There is a nice version of YRGM, with Ray's intro, from a BBC performance .
. . Dave's guitar work is REALLY nice and the group sounds great. Don't know
if this is the version from the Kinks on BBC discs or not. Also the host
gives a bit of info about the relationship between the band and Reprise
Records . . .

Thanks for the news regarding the theatre awards, Frank. I did vote for
Come Dancing, although the White Devil was pretty darn good and I'm
pleased I chose to see it that weekend in London. I also voted for
Kenneth Branagh for best actor as I also saw Ivanov, which was amazing

Subject: This Man He Weeps Monday Night

I was "Sitting on My Sofa," watching "How I Met Your Mother" on TV, and
I had to rewind it on my DVR to make sure I was hearing it right - they
were playing "This Man He Weeps Tonight" in the background! One of my
favorite Dave songs, and such an obscure one to turn up on TV! It
continued to play in the background in a couple more scenes. Does
anybody who heard it know whose version that was? It sounded like it
could possibly have been Dave singing, but it wasn't the standard
version if it was him.

Back in June the venerable NYC tribute show rock outfit Loser's Lounge
reprised their Kinks tribute from about 10 years ago. You can see
clips of pretty much all of the songs that were done right here:

I was at one of the shows, though not this one. Musically all the songs
are pretty faithful to the originals and well performed. Vocally, it's a
mixed bag because each song gets a different lead vocalist.
Some people are suited for their songs; others probably only heard it
for the first time three days earlier. But it's fun to watch anyway.

Subject: Paul McCartney's new CD

To all: I know we don't often talk about other bands or artists here much
but I was doing some googling whilst drinking some Sam Adams Chocolate
Bock and found the following link which I found really interesting. I was
at the contact music site and it was an article where Ray recommended Paul
Mccartney do something extreme!

The new Fireman CD is definitely that, and very very good-worth picking up
if you like or used to like Paul. The previous Fireman CD's were ambient
dance music-which for me is a complete waste of time, guess he was trying
to corner the Ecstacy market. The new CD is exactly what Ray recommended
to Paul in this article-to go outside of his standard release/approach
etc. This CD improves with each new listen, you may argue its still
Mccartney but with strange sounds etc-well its better than that.

As I said in an earlier post, and I know Frank agreed, Ray is very
engaging now with the press. This is an example of where he is getting
his name and the Kinks out there. It would be nice to see someone who
interviews Mccartney ask him if he had seen Ray's comments, and took them
to heart-sure he would deny it but Ray is his peer-and I know Paul has
always said good things about Ray, the Kinks etc.

Keep the name alive, and if your looking for a new CD, thats different I
would recommend Paul's new one. I know that each release he has had the
same spin---this is the best of his career=which they never are, well this
is not Band on the Run, but it is very good and different. Mr Bill

Had a great time at the show in Poughkeepsie Saturday night. Not what I
expected, but still a marvelous night of Ray! The announcement and ads
for the show said Ray would be with a full band. Hell, it was printed on
the tickets, too! So, it was a different night than the one I expected.
(I know the shows have been discussed here, but I avoided reading about
them because I like to be surprised about which songs are played. I don't
watch the "scenes from next week's episode" previews on TV, either).

My 13 year old daughter's first ever Kink related show. I lost her to
Locksley. She loved them and asked for the CD. So between acts I got it
for her and she got it autographed. They seem like good kids, hope they
get a break. If anything, they have to be floating on air backing Ray at
the end of the shows.

Odd fact: I've now seen both Dave and Ray in Poughkeepsie...and they both
opened with the same song: I Need You...a song I never saw the Kinks play
live.

One verse of Shangri-La is better than none, even if it was for a loud,
drunk screaming every other minute sitting next to us.

Starstruck? Are you kidding me? What a great surprise!

The old demon Alcohol & Low Budget were unexpected pleasures...but is Ray
embarrassed by the RCA & Arista years? I think those were the only two
songs he played from those eras.

It was great to hear the pair of songs from OPL, although I was hoping for
The Tourist. I see, now that I've read the set lists posted here, that he
has been playing it, so maybe next week.

One comment, and maybe this is just me, but Frank lamented that the crowd
remained seated. Sorry Frank...that was HEAVEN! Just because I don't
jump around like I'm 20 anymore doesn't mean I'm not getting into the
experience. In fact, now I can see the nuances of Ray's playing style and
enjoy both the visual and sound experience without having to worry about
falling off the chair I'm standing on. What a concept. Pity that won't
be the case in Burlington next week.

Anyway...

[The 9:30 Club last night was the first standing show. The Locksley lead
singer mentioned it and said he hoped we would do Ray proud. I enjoyed
Locksley's set and plan to get their CD at some point. - Neil]

The Bardavon Show - my first time at this theatre - beautiful old theatre
w/800 seats. Sat 2nd row - amazing. One confusion on my part - my ticket
said Ray Davies w/full Band - he did an acoustical show and at the very
end - Locksley appeared. It was all good but I love electric as well and
didn't get enough of that. Most memorable song from the set was the
Morphine Song. The only not so good thing was this town only runs trains
til 11 p.m. We missed that train home and paid $75.00 for a cab ride.

Neil - just got back from Ray's 9:30 Klub Koncert. I wish I had kept a
list of the songs, but I will leave that to others who take beter notes
than I. Needless to say, we were overwhelmed by the vast song library that
Ray can pull from. We were treated with the vast Kink Katalog, from Dead
End Street to Father Christmas. I was in the upper reaches of the
theatre, listening on my tip-ee-toes as Ray went thru the hits, as well as
his solo hits. I don' t think I could be ever be as humbled as I was when
Ray sang See My Friends. I lost my sister a few years ago and when Ray
dedicated this song to his passed sister, I felt his pain. I only wish my
sister were around to see Ray this year - she truly would have appreciated
what these blokes have kontributed to our lives and the impact of their
music on our generation. Please help me dedicate this concert to the life
of my sister Eileen and always remember how short and tragic our lives may
be. God save the Kinks - and especially to Ray for helping us truly
remember what matters most - family and friends.

Subject: Ray at 930 club in DC and last 4 shows with BAND!!!

Just want to say it was great meeting many old friends and new friends last night at the 930 club in DC...we froze our butts off on line for hours waiting to get in but it was worth it. The 5 hour plus ride each way was too...left home at about 11am and got home about 5:30 am the next day..or make that today. Life on the road makes it hard to know what day it is or where you are and no sleep does not help.

Great seeing Neil and his wife there last night...Show was a great show, nothing unusual but still great show. I will leave the posting of the details of the show to Neil. Locksley's set was their absolute best of the entire tour so far. They added one new song, a small faces cover (can't remember name?) but it was GREAT.!!! Last night's show for Locksley was right on the money. I talked with the band about it after the show and they thought the exact same thing! Also got see see Jeff again who we run in to in very strange locations for Ray from time to time, the traveling duo of Debbie & John, the always entertaining and good friend and man who put the kabong in El-Kabong... Bruce McQueen, his wife and daughters, and many others whose names escape me at this moment!

Ray was in a very good mood last night, so good that he stopped his van on the way out and let fans form a procession to get his autograph on the way out...also Dr. Ray administered medication to a sick Andrea after the show LOL, and outside there were about 25 people waiting...it was super cold out last night otherwise I'm sure there would have been more. Speaking of which although the ticket sales were rumored to be not that good, by show time the place was pretty much filled, I don't know if was sold out but it probably was close. I'm a little worried about the NYC show because the venue may be too large for the number of tickets Ray has been selling on this tour and it could look empty...let's hope Ray and the KinKs favorite city for doing the best shows doesn't disappoint...in fact...

I am encouraging everyone at these last 4 shows...PROVIDENCE, VERMONT, NYC AND ASBURY PARK TO GIVE RAY AND HIS BAND THE BEST WELCOME AND LET THEM KNOW HOW MUCH WE APPRECIATE THEM HERE IN THE NORTH EAST..because it will directly affect how often he comes back here!!! So go all out...bring the plates, bring your high energy level, stand up every chance you get if it is a seated venue, be ready to rock for the rockers and be inspired by the non-rockers...give these last 4 shows everything you have in you like it was an old Kinks show...and it could almost turn in to one if the audience pushes the old brown envelope!!!!

Ray's band arrived in Boston last night, for the Providence show Wednesday! I think I convinced Ray to do Father Christmas on this tour, and I may have convinced the band to learn it so I'm sure they are pissed at me LOL!!!!

LOOK OUT Rock & Roll Cities HERE WE COME...bring plates, confetti, glitter anything to turn these last 4 shows in to as close to a kinks show as we can! ( anyone have Dave in a can? LOL )

besides giving Ray's band a super enthusiastic welcome if you get a chance let Bill Shanley know what an amazing job he has done and his doing on this tour. Really outstanding playing from Bill !!!

[Capacity for the 9:30 Club is 1200. The place looked quite packed, but probably could have squeezed more in. One night after two British rock icons -- Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend
of the Who -- were feted by superstars and dignitaries at the Kennedy
Center, a third one couldn't quite fill the 9:30 club. But if Kinks
frontman Ray Davies lacks their level of recognition and renown, his
performance Monday night proved that his songbook is as deep and thrilling
as that of any of his contemporaries.

Davies ran through a string of Kinks classics -- "Dead End Street,"
"Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and "Sunny Afternoon," among others --
that were as bouncy, clever and effortlessly catchy as ever, even with
just Davies and Bill Shanley performing on acoustic guitars.

The highlights ranged his catalogue, from an early slice of teen angst
("I'm Not Like Everybody Else") to the British Invasion staple
"Well-Respected Man" to the more introspective "Working Man's Cafe," on
which Davies returned to his career-long theme of pining for the
subtleties of simpler times.

For the encore, opening act Locksley helped Davies charge through the
early power-chord anthems "You Really Got Me" and "Till the End of the
Day." So what if the songs were built on the same chords played in a
slightly different order? Nearly 45 years later, they resonated just as
strongly, while the concluding "Lola" was equally euphoric.

"I used to be in a band," Davies said earlier in the show, and quickly
added: "I'm still in the band, I'm just waiting for the call to do another
tour." Judging by Monday's show, that inevitable Kinks reunion will be
more than worthy of the hype.

Could it be that the version of "This Man He Weeps Tonight" reported a
couple of digests ago was the re-recorded acoustic version from one of
Dave's anthologies from a few years back? Dave re-recorded versions of
"Death of a Clown," "Hold My Hand" and a few others of his early songs.
I forget whether it was a rights issue (Dave not being able to get the
rights to put the originals on the anthology) or whether he thought it
would be fun and interesting to re-interpret the songs. They were very
good and mostly acoustic. That's my guess as to the version that was
heard and reported here, but without having heard it I can't be sure, of
course.

My guess is that Ray dropped Over My Head from the set because he
doesn't have the lovely Karin Forsman singing harmony with him on this
tour. I hope they do sing together again, though. Does anyone know if
any of the Kinks were interviewed for the Biography channel special? I
watched their Biography special on Bob Dylan some years back, and The
Man himself wasn't part of it. They didn't have access to much of his
inner circle, either. Most of the "talking heads" were just music
journalists, and there may have been 2 minutes of Bob's music in the
entire 2 hour show. I really didn't learn anything about the man I
didn't already know, but some good archival clips would've made it
worthwhile viewing. I hope they can do better with the Kinks,God save
them!

Asking Frankie or anyone else who heard it....
What was Ray's explanation regarding Getaway Lonesome Train?

I saw Ray in Atlanta in 2006 (couldn't take off work long enough to get
there and back on a Tuesday night this time!!). I was happy to hear him
play that song because it's one of my favorites on OPL. I remember him
saying that he'd always wanted to do a song that started out with
something about the old lonesome train whistle blowing, like on the
country and blues records he used to listen to, but he thought it would
be an affectation for a Londoner. However, after having lived in New
Orleans, he'd gotten the feeling for it and/or earned the right to
start a song that way.

I read my east coast buddy Mike heard Sunny Afternoon in the Super Market.
When he went to the next aisle, the worker was singing "I want To Be Bobby's
Girl!!!" What a Let down!!! That song came out in the early sixties by
Marcie Blaine. As far as I can remember, she went to One Hit Heaven. Not
sure if she ever really became "Bobby's Girl!!!

I agree
with Daniel. I'm not for buying 6 CD's that consist mostly of songs I
already own to get say 8 or 9. It's a rip off by the record company,
IMO. Who else but a dedicated fan is going to buy this type of
collection anyway? Sales figures will eventually confirm.

You can't use having songs on a bootleg as an excuse for not buying a legitimate release. Tonight I listened to CD1-3.
It has been a long time since I listened to The Kinks
3 CD's in a row, but boy/girl, did I like it!
Takes I have never heard before:

- Good luck charm (surely a different take!)

(there are even more takes).
The 2 Ravens-songs I'm a hog for you and I believed you

yesterday evening. Ritchie Sambora started the show with the intro and
then Jon Bon Jovi sang the first verse. He then introduced Ray Davies
and both sang the lyrics alternatly. Ray Davies showed up with a brown
coat, sunglasses and white shoes and it seems he felt a bit
uncomfortable when he did't sing. So he also left the stage soon after
the Kinks tune and Bon Jovi started with their regular set.

It doesn't bother me that they don't have a group name. Paul McCartney does
very similar tours to Ray's (though in places that hold 10 or 20 times as
many people, and with tickets that cost four or five times as much), and
when he talks about his backup musicians he says things like "this fantastic
band of mine," which I think is a phrase Ray has used many times too. I
mean, if he wants to give them a name, fine, but to me that works just as
well.

By the way, now that he has the full band again, is this the same band he
had in the spring? (Which, as I recall, is the same band he had in 2006
except for a different guitar player, right?)

I'm trying to even imagine Indian food in Atlanta in 1978, which is when
that was. Thirty years later, there's not a lot of Indian food in
Birmingham, and I'd be really careful where I got sushi. The Kinks
needed to have had somebody who knew about the South with them at that
time. Of course, now that Ray's lived in Nawlins, he knows what to eat
in this part of the country. I hear that little Indian takeaways are
good in London and New York City.

Last night at the Hammerstein I saw my first full band Shangri-la ever, and I loved it. Ray's band even had keyboards, so the sound of the song was quite full (even if Ray, bless his heart, did flub some lyrics toward the end). Other very pleasant surprises included Starstruck, Johnny Thunder, and VGPS. Ray referred to the coming 40th anniversary of Arthur -- I do hope he does something special for it.

When Ray with band (on this and previous tours) performs Come Dancing, they always leave out Dave's power chords mid song. I wonder if they do that on purpose, as a tribute to Dave (it's quite noticeable, and immediately makes me think of Dave).

Ray's band last night was not merely Locksley performing a few recently-learned songs, as has been reported for previous nights. This was a full band, with some members that I think I recognized from Ray's shows last spring, plus Karin on a few songs (but unfortunately not on Over My Head). The band is quite good, and Bill on guitar (and back up singing) -- wow!

Locksley, btw, was very enjoyable. Good, energetic Brit-pop -- though the vocal mics were way too low, and you could barely hear the vocals. Too bad.

A word about Frank's memory. Both of my daughters were at the show, though they got there after me and weren't able to get up to where I was on the floor. Earlier in the evening, on line outside the theatre, Frank gave me a God Save Ray Davies button. After the show, my younger daughter (who has become quite the 60s-70s music aficionado -- she is now my main concert buddy!) saw my button and asked where I got it and if she could get one. So I introduced her to Frank, who of course gave her one, and then said "I met you before -- at a Ray show at the Westbeth." He was correct -- both of my daughters saw Ray at the Westbeth in 1996 -- 12+ years ago. Frank then said that my daughter was wearing a Dave Davies t-shirt, the AFL (barcode) shirt -- which is correct (I distinctly remember that). Amazing. Frank has his memory priorities straight!

Quick cute story about that show (which I think I have told here before). My daughters were then 8 and 12. When we sat down, the guy sitting next to us, a stranger, decided to test my daughters' knowledge of Kinks songs. So he asked them, "Who crossed over the river to feel safe and sound?" They both answered Terry and Julie. Then he asked, who are the two sisters? (Ray was performing that song on that tour). Again, they both answered Sybilla and Priscilla. The guy was very impressed -- and I was so proud!

It was great seeing lots of fellow Kinks fanatiks last night (Sharon had a new poster for all of us to sign, and the plates and Santa hats were flying). Really looking forward to tonight's show in my beloved Asbury Park!

Fu*king "SHANGRILA" was the highlight for sure. Also he did "Starstruck" another rarity. I've been seeing the Kinks since 1973 & I never ever heard them/He do Shangrila........................Once as a 30 second tease in Atlanta at the Fox Thr. in 1981. Surprisingly enough he didn't do "LOLA" that was a first for me. (This is not the right order) But he did do I'm Not Like Everybody Else/Sunny Afternoon/Dedicated Follower/Where Have All The Good Times /Gone /JohnnyThunder/ VGPS/ Victoria/ Vietnam Cowboys/ The Getaway/ Morphine Song/ You Really Got Me/ All Day & Night/ Celluloid Heroes/ The Tourist/ See My Friends. That's about all I can remember since I didn't write anything down. He did about a 40 min. acoustic set w/just the guitarist. Then the Band came on.

Same Band as in April w/the exception of the guitarist. He made a comment
about how we (N.Y.) were lucky to see him twice in 1 year. Also he told a
few funny stories including a good one about how he got a call from Dave who
wanted to meet in some cafe somewhere in England & talk. He picked a time
when to meet. So Ray goes over to the cafe & is waiting & waiting and no Dave,
so he finally calls him up & Dave doesn't want to talk to him, saying there's
a bad connection & he's breaking up etc etc. Also he said to the crowd
"The 2 questions people always ask me are What about the Reunion ? & How is
Dave? If it happens it happens and as far as Dave goes Dave is good, Dave is
fine, Dave is still a pain in my arse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah I was lucky
enough to be right on the rail by the stage. All in all I give the show a
rating from 1-10 a 9.

P.S. It was also a lot of fun talking & finally meeting some of the Digesters who I know by name but not by face, exchanging stories & stuff. Larry "Angerface" Anger

I second FranK's emotion about Ray's show in Providence on Wednesday
night. The Shangri La rendition was so moving (we've never heard it
live, either), and I thought "See My Friends" was beautifully done,
too. We had a blast and enjoyed every second of the show -- the only
problem being that we sold an extra ticket cheap to someone outside
who sold it to someone else who was SCREAMING every single lyric plus
a lot of other nonsense. Don't mean to offend if anyone on the digest
is this person --- just shows how old and crotchedy we've become.....

Subject: this is the morning after, I don't know where to begin

I'm totally depressed, last night we said all our long goodbyes to Ray, his great band and crew and now after a 2 week whirl wind east coast tour it's the morning after and life goes on...it's like being on the greatest drug in all the world and having it stop all at once and CRASH!!!! and now life goes on in the real world.

I don't know where to begin, or end so for the next few weeks I'm sure I will just ramble little bits and pieces of what I can remember when I can remember it....

Since a 1971 kinks show when Preservation Mike was just 13 years old it has always been a pleasure to meet him at shows in the North East...he is one of the survivors and one of the few people I think relate to Ray's lyrics the way I do...last night in asbury park I also met a kid now about 19 or 20 but 10 years ago when he was a child at a show in this area I brought him back stage to see Ray and? Ray signed his tshirt well last night him and his father thanked me again and he was wearing the shirt and is now a kinks fan for life!

Asbury Park was a great high energy show... not my favorite set list of the tour but because they came out swinging with full band the energy level was pretty high even for a seated audience who kept bouncing up every chance they got and remained up after a while. Ray and the band were in really good moods and a great time was had by all...I have to say that it's almost as much fun meeting all the great new and old fans at these shows as it is to see the shows...The kinks, Ray and Dave have absolutely the greatest fans ever, and on this tour I think I saw as many old faces and friends and made as many new ones too as any previous tour...and not just from the east coast our US but from everywhere! More stories to come..

Ray Davies and the Rock Band - Lupo's, Providence RI, Dec. 10 2008

I've seen Ray solo with a band three times, and this was the best of the
three. Lupo's in Providence is a better venue than the Orpheum, where I
have seen him twice, and his band is much improved.

Lupo's is an old converted movie theater with a decent sized stage
raised high enough so people can see. There was a premium seating
section in the front, with about 10 rows, and it was worth the
reasonable additional cost to sit there. Very good visibility for anyone
in that section. Behind this section one can stand and watch, although I
don't think there's a huge amount of good standing room. The bulk of the
seating is in the balcony, which because of its steep slope, also
provides very good views. It's a shabby old building with some of its
art deco cinema features still intact -- chandeliers, a
(non-functioning) marble water bubbler -- but it has its charm. Once the
lights go on at the end of the night, one sees how decrepit it really
is, but once you turn off the (living room) light, that doesn't matter.
The place has character.

Worst thing about the venue is the the parking, or lack thereof. Next
time I go to a show there I will investigate public transit options,
since I saw city buses driving right by while I was circling the block
numerous times looking for parking. I finally got lucky and found an on
street spot about three block from Lupo's, but most of the folks I
talked to said they had spent $20 or more to park in a garage.

Another improvement this time around was the opening band, a 4-piece
rock band called Locksley, from Madison, Wisconsin. ("It's the
Providence of the Midwest!" they said.) They had a British
invasion/1950s vibe to them that was very listenable indeed, and they
really looked like a rock band. They were cute, all of them sang well,
they shared microphones while singing (think Paul and George), they had
a HIGH energy level, and they looked like different types -- one had a
preppy look, another a working-class look, etc. They were so good my
concert going partner bought their CD and it's been spinning on my
turntable ever since.

Ray himself seemed quite relaxed and in a good mood. It's true that he
sat for more than half of the show, but listen, the guy is a 64 year old
man who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg four years ago, and the fact
that he's doing this much is truly remarkable. He did stand and even
danced around for a few of the songs in the second half of the show. Ray
just can't do "Low Budget" without a certain amount of prancing around
on stage.

The show began with Ray and one other guitarist sitting on stools. They
played an acoustic set of about eight songs. Ray's choice of "I Need
You" to start the show made me wonder, since Dave opened many shows with
a rockin' version of that song, but Ray's version is so quiet it's
really a different song. He included a folksy "Father Christmas" and a
touching "See My Friends," which he said was inspired by the death of
his older sister. The highlight of the acoustic part of the show was
"The Morphine Song," a song that is unique in Ray's katalog in that it
tells a specific autobiographical story, apparently completely factual.
Although of course the gunshot incident was horrible, it became a
powerful motivator to Ray's creativity, and this song was part of that.

After the opening seven songs, Ray sang "Harry Rag" to cover up while
the rest of his musicians were coming out onto stage and setting up, and
during the next couple of songs the rest of the band gradually joined
in. He referred to his backing musicians as "the rock band" -- as I have
already posted, I think they need a name. During "The Tourist" Ray went
off stage to change his clothes. I was expecting the Union Jack/Old
Glory jacket, but maybe it has finally hit the rag bag. Instead, he
changed into a pullover zippered top. Although it was somewhat
nondescript, he did look fit and trim wearing it.

The musical highlight of the night without a doubt was "Shangri-La." Ray
introduced the song by saying this year was the 40th anniversary of
'Village Green Preservation Society,' but instead of playing something
from that record he would play something from the record that came out
the next year, 'Arthur.' I'm not sure the performance of "Shangri-La"
was actually all that good, but nobody cared; what a thrill it was to
hear that incredible song performed live (with Dave's harmonies loud and
clear in my imagination). There was a short bit of "Misfits" at one
point that I think may have been impromptu. Another musical highlight
was "YRGM," which the band began by playing like a slow blues. Ray told
the story of the evolution of the song, giving credit to Dave for
inserting the musical elements into the song that turned it from the
slow blues it was when he wrote it into the perfect rock 'n' roll record
that it became. He described Dave's creation of the familiar riff and
said that when he played the riff, "he played himself into rock 'n' roll
history," and then the band broke out of blues mode and played the song
like the rock song that it is. It was a very effective way of presenting
a song we have all heard ten gazillion times.

As other posters have said, it was a great pleasure to see all those
Kinky friends of mine and to make a couple of new ones, too. I've known
a lot of you folks for more than a dozen years and it's always great to
see you at the various shows.

I was not happy with the kinks biography on bio channel (I saw it via
youtube). For one Ray Davies did not get enough face time - they repeated
the same video of the kinks in a couple of scenes - they never talked
about a lot of the hit songs (never mention So Tired or All Day) - one
hour was not enough time to explain their history as far as Im concern -
but on a positive note, the general public finally gets to see the story
of the kinks.

[I haven't seen it yet. Given that once you remove commercials it must be
about only 45 minutes long, you know there are going to be limitations. -

Biography got their facts wrong.Muswell Hillbillies was received very well
and the magazine Stereo Review gave it lp of the year.It was all the other
RCA lps that weren't well received.Surprising because the Stereo Review was
about stereo and recording equipment in general and Muswell Hillbillies was
not a well produced lp.Always sounded kind of muddy to my ears.The recent cd
releases have improved the sound quality.

I was fortunate to see Ray Davies at both his recent New York and New Jersey
shows. Both shows were really enjoyable. Thanks to Ray for coming to our
area twice this year.

Hopefully 2009 will see a Kinks reunion, if they can fit it into their schedules! Ray we think would like a Kinks reunion and wants to record some new Kinks songs. Based upon interviews on the recent Biography Channel Biop, it seems that both Mick and Dave are willing, but Pete Quaife does (definitely he said) not want to be involved! Common Pete!

Subject: The Sound At Ray's Recent Shows

Some one mentioned this in the last digest and it's something that bothered me a bit during the two shows I got to see on this tour. Let's preface this by saying I would ABSOLUTELY go again to see Ray, even if I knew this would not be improved.

The sound. Not just bad...really bad. Not when it was just Ray and Bill together. And not during Locksley. But when Ray's full bad was on, the sound was mixed horribly and was WAY too loud for the venue, painfully so. Halfway through the Burlington show I ended up tearing up a napkin and stuffed some in my ears. Now, I've been in bands and I've worked in radio with loud headsets for three decades and if I think it's loud, trust me...it's LOUD.

At the Bardavon show, Locksley was great, Ray and Bill were sublime...but when Locksley joined Ray on stage it was the same problem. Painfully loud. It distorted the mix and turned it all into one big drone. In Burlington, the power chord breaks during The Tourist...I swear I was going to get a concussion.

Ray, you have more talent than any musician I've ever enjoyed. You have found a band that, while they can't replace Dave, seem to be in step with what you are doing. Please...find yourself a better sound man!

And here's another great Greg Shaw discovery from 35+ years ago! It.s a driving Powerhouse Pop track sounding very much like some unreleased late 60s Kinks track. It's a great tune in its own right, but they just had to have been huge Kinks fans as it resonates pure Kinkdom and the vocals are effectively channeling Ray Davies. The A side is not quite as marvelous, still close to the Kinks; it adds a Vaudevillian feel to the proceedings. The Bone were from Massachusetts and this single was released on Connecticut's Poison Ring Records. It appears that some members then moved on to form The Tweeds.

Neil,

I have often heard it mentioned that The Kinks sued The Doors for the similarity between "Hello I Love You" and "All Day And All Of The Night." Not true.

Back in the 70s, I was doing research for a special Kinks Fan Club book that Gene Davidson was compiling (remember him?). This research included way too many hours of reading BILLBOARD on microfilm at Penn State's library in State College, Pennsylvania (OUCH! Microfilm headaches!!!). According to BILLBOARD, the lawsuit was instigated by Jay Boy Music, the publishers of The Kinks' early hits. It went on to say that Ray took "Hello, I Love You" as a compliment and that he thought Jim Morrison was a great singer. He commented that Jim's voice reminded him of another one of his favorite singers, Andy Williams!!! (Sadly, I'm not joking.)

Just thought I'd set the story straight.

Brilliant, Ms. Evilness. I can see Shatner as a parallel to Ray. Both are
brilliant, funny, charming, handsome, and have a cult following as well as a
larger following. Like The Kinks' songs, Star Trek shows can stand alone
as the equivalent of short stories, and serve as metaphor for life and how
we ought to be living. And, here's the biggie....both go "Where no man has
gone before." I mean, most Kinks albums were a total change from the
previous, were they not...and all awhile, being different from anything else
out there (which can be argued for why they weren't even more popular).

On that happy note, I just want to tell you younger people to keep good
thoughts in mind and to lay the groundwork for your future, as this
recession/depression will eventually end and those who are prepared can do
well when it does. Don't be like me and live a wasted life, just outside of
Holloway Jail.

as a uk fan just got a computer love to share this story with you as a 16 year
old in 1968 the kinks were appearing at the top hat in spennymoor co. durham on
a caberet tour for 1 week i walked 3 miles each night with my albums and
scrapbooks in hand. one night a roadie(i think his name was rodger) asked me to
help him upstairs with the kinks equipment wow.that night i was on the stage
behind the amps etc and then invited into their changing room where they
autographed my albums and scrapbooks.i asked them about the delay of the
release of village green preservation society and talked to dave about lincoln
county.they would leave the top hat to go on to play at stockton fiesta the
same evening.i have always wanted to share this story with kinks fans they were
absolutely brilliant with me i will never forget it.Ray did not like playing at
the top hat 40 years ago now GOD BLESS THE KINKS.

Canadians agree with me.I live in Ohio, USA, but I often listen to a
Canadian station from across Lake Erie. CIDR, 93.9 FM Windsor,ON.

commented on his great enjoyment of the Kinks. One thing in particular was
that he most enjoyed the early/mid 1970s Kinks, and that his favorite Kinks
Album is "Soap Opera". He noted that he is younger, maybe less than 30 from
what I could tell. He went on for a couple minutes about his like of the
Kinks. It is rare for air personalities to say much beyond their scripts
in this modern radio era.On a side note, when I was a kid in the 1970s my
two favorite Kinks Albums were "Soap Opera" and "Sleepwalker". I would
listen to those two over and over, and pretty much wore out my vinyl LPs. --

I have noticed the bias against post Reprise/Pye works of the Kinks. It
seems that all Kinks fans of all generations love the 60's stuff, but
after that, we're very divided. Some extend their love of all things
Kinky up through the RCA rock opera years. Some will even go so far as
the Arista years. Me, I love it all! Phobia is one of my favorite Kinks
albums, there's much from all eras that I love. Some fans see the Arista
years as when the Kinks sold out, went commercial. Maybe the sound of
those records was more radio friendly, but I can't imagine the likes of
Journey or Foreigner doing a song like Art Lover or Come Dancing. None
of the stadium/arena bands of that era had the wit of Low Budget or
Permanent Waves, and I can't imagine them doing the kind of self
examination Ray did on A Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy or Good Day.

Hey Chris--

I'm not from the UK, but in 1983 I travelled to London and record shop
hopped looking for Kinks lps. VERY few except for greatest hits packages
were available. I asked record store people and they were not
particularly Kinks friendly. At BMV the guy was nice but was astonished
when I told him that the Kinks had had a hit in the states with Come
Dancing.

If I'm not mistaken, the British Invasion Bands were all doing far
better in the States than in UK around that time.

Well, for a start 'Come dancing' is, for many reasons, arguably the best
song of the '80s & '90s Kinks, and it is the song Ray based his musical
around. (So why sell it short with only a demo on the box set?).

The industry changed with the coming of the '70s. It wasn't groups anymore
(be they pop, beat, or R&B) competing on an almost weekly basis to outdo one
another, it was rock and roll bands centre stage and this was not
necessarily what made the Kinks special. As far as stadium rock went they
could only be also rans against the Stones, the Who, whoever. And the
Beatles, of course, never had to meet that challenge. It also became a
career - working in the factory.

Song for song across that great divide CDs 4,5 & 6 of the box set don't
really compete with the first three. Your attention does wander. That
doesn't mean to say say there were not some interesting and some great songs
and performances put out over those years that have not had the attention
they deserve, both here in the UK or the US, but I'm not sure the box set
goes about remedying that as well as it could.

A couple of years ago I put together a CD of post-Sleepwalker songs (I did't
dare push the theatricals on them and, ahem, Sleepwalker has nothing to
offer) for a couple of friends to make just this point. It was successful
to a certain extent. One of those friends has worked with Jon Savage and
suggested I send him a copy, which I did. His response was, OK, but they
still don't compare; but then he thinks the rot set in with 'Muswell
Hillbillies'.

There were 18 songs on that CD I made (I called it The Kinks - a busted
flush?) and only 8 of those are included in the box set. The 10 that are
not in the box set are:
In a foreign land
Moving pictures
Killer's eyes
Good day
Working in the factory
Still searching
Don't
Hatred
Did ya
UK Jive

What I certainly didn't include were the stadium rock horrors 'State of
confusion' and - Ray, what were you thinking of? - 'Phobia'. Nor the
meritless 'Catch me now I'm falling' or the plodding 'Gallon of gas', never
mind 'Rock 'n'roll fantasy'. But then, of course, I have to add IMHO
because I know we are a broad church here. Nor do the outakes do us many
favours there in the middle of disc 5, outtakes which, I am afraid on a
couple of hearings I don't exactly find crucial, though 'Duke' is
interesting in a Wordsworthian when-I-was-a-child way. And I agree with
Rob, where was 'Back in '64'? - if that indeed is what the track was called
that was played at the Konvention a few years ago.

Of the three UK reviews I've read in any detail, Petridis in the Guardian is
yer basic punk as year zero merchant so we should be grateful for what we
got (and he got a lot wrong factually), Jon Savage in Uncut has his own
position, as reported above, and Paul du Noyer in Word magazine did give the
later years some sort of acknowledgment.

What I was delighted to find in the box set, by the way, is the great fun
that is 'Long distance', that glorious Dylan pastiche, and 'Down all the
days' - love the way he sings, 'Ireland'. Overall I echo what someone else
wrote earlier, about it giving us an opportunity to hear the stuff in a
different context. And I like the way the first CD gives a potted history
of more than just the early Kinks, the way the beat group/Beatles influences
impinged - I suspect everybody's 'Hog for you' sounded like that. And the
booklet is very good.

Hi Neil,

First of all thanks for the great job you do and seasons greetings to
all in the KPS.

This is my first ever post and its about the UK perception that after
Muswell Hillbillies the artistic merit of The Kinks output declined.

This point of view is put across in several UK reviews of the Box set
although it is not a new perception.

I have to agree that the output of the sixties was outstanding and the
more time goes on the more outstanding the older songs seem but I do
think that the reviewers are doing the later day Kinks a disservice.

The first original Kinks Album I bought was Sleepwalker (plus all other albums since) and my first show was the Bradford leg of the UK tour supporting Low Budget and the Superman single. During the Arista years the Kinks were not successful because they were lucky, they did well because they produced good albums and did great live shows. Years of hard work on the road in the USA paid off and Clive Davies new how to deal with a band that were head and shoulders above many of the contemporary bands of the time.

Ground breaking no, but very good yes!!. I really think that any
reviewers (not just UK) should look at how good The Kinks later output
was in comparison with the type of material that was around at the time
and how it has now stood the test of time. This goes for the RCA, London
(MCA), and Sony output. The excellent Grapevine To the bone single and
double albums should not be forgotten either.

As we know there is much more to the Kinks than the 1960's, surely people in the music press should realise this. So come on reviewers, give a bit of credit where it's due to the later day Kinks.

In reply to the question from Chris,my tuppence worth: The media is
probably to blame for the impression that the Kinks were a spent force in
the UK after 1970. . Certainly as a 'singles' band with the exception of
Come Dancing that is probably true. It is only thanks to DJ's such as Bob
Harris and the late John Peel that rarities like Muswell Hillbillies,the
Preservation sets and beyond had any airplay. Everything after 1970 was
definitely not crap. With the exception of enthusiasts though the
'average' UK listener probably only remembers the 60's singles. This is
propagated by the intro to any interview when the inevitable 'example'
played is "You really got me" Thanks are due to the US fans for keeping
the Kinks afloat during that period as well as the tenacity of the
brothers. An American fan once said to me that I was unusual in favouring
Muswell Hillbillies because they thought that it appealed more to US
fans. The New Musical Express gave them a hard time although a review of
Low Budget by Charles Shaar Murray was relatively favourable.

It was good while it lasted.

Don't know if anyone else caught this, but on Conan's Thursday night show,
Max and the band launched into Better Things just as they were going to
commercial. Unfortunately only a few bars were aired before they faded out.

PS: I was great to see Ray "Rockin' Out and Having Fun" in Asbury Park 13
years after I saw the Kinks lay waste to the Stone Pony in '93.

Hey Neil - I was out of town on business at the time but a good (and now
well envied) friend of mine went to Ray's performance at the Bardovon in
Poughkeepsie.

We were wondering if anyone else on your list attended and if they now the
complete set that Ray played. I heard it was good and there were some of
the more obscure songs played, as well as requests.

"3 KINKS Songs"

Hi all! I just watched the coolest movie last night on Encore. It was a little independent film from 2007 called "The Darjeeling Limited" w/ Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody & Jason Schwartzman thee Brothers who decide to take a train trip thru India in search of their Mom & enlightenment. Not only was it a hip film but they also used 3 (count em') Kinks songs in it. "This Time Tomorrow", "Strangers" & "Powerman all from Lola Vs. Powerman album 1970. A definite first time I can recall that. I mean every now & then you might hear one play in a movie but three??? Wow! Some hip director & co.....
Peace. Larry "Angerface" Anger P.S.......... In watching the Kinks Biography I noticed when talking to Dave he wasn't slurring anymore. Does anybody know if those interviews were done before or after the stroke? I mean in a few of the scenes Ray looked a little younger as did Dave. If anybody knows can you please say something about it? If they were recent w/ Dave that's a good sign, because when they were accepted into the British Hall of Fame, Dave was definietly slurred in the speech.

[I haven't seen anything on the web about Phil Palmer playing with Molly
Johnson, but since he is a session guitarist in both jazz and rock, he is

Seldomly have I disagreed more then what Dave and Jill sums up. It does show
that even in being a Kinks-fan you can have a complete different taste of
music, and you just got to love the variety in the albums they make.

SOC is my first Kinks-album, so i know every note of that one, I never was
the same after htat.. Low Budget just showed our boys as a pure band, very
raw. And then one album later Misfits shows Ray still hasn't lost his
intererest in concept-albums. Phobia was with Hatred, Only A Dream,
Surviving, and The Informer a definite gem, and touring this album got me
the opportunity to see them for the second and last time...

Right, back to the cliches of the world overhere, cheers.
